Going to be real rough for rural areas near term and beef futures and pork futures are very low as well.

Serious question Bryce - WI farmers have seen record bankruptcy rates the last four years and I believe they have led the country in that category. How are they going to make it? The farmers I know could be in deep, deep trouble if those futures prove true.

Something is wrong, 20 years ago commodity prices were about the same as now, land prices were 1-2000 an acre, interest rates were about 8%
Today, land is 10000 an acre, interest rates are sub 4%. Some one needs to put batteries in the calculator.

Ag producers have been backed into a corner so they have no control over prices. Eventually the Govt or huge corps will own all the land. All they have to do is yank the subsidies and farmers are broke.
What's a bushel of seed corn sell for these days?

China is buying up huge amounts of American farm land directly and through Chinese babies, who are born here just to get American citizenship, but who then grow up in China.

Probably around 50,000 Chinese babies are born here every year just to take advantage of our now outdated citizenship by birth laws.

A huge number of Russian babies are born here for thesame reason.

Our country is being stolen.

Our country is being SOLD to the Chicoms, by our illustrious politicians. One would wonder where we would be right now if Trump hadn't been elected and took the fight back to the Chinese? It would not be a stretch to say the democrat leadership is bought and payed for by them. If you notice their frenzy goes up a notch every time Trump pressed the Chinese.

I can tell you what's wrong Diggerman. Drain the swamp, spank bad kids, punish people who break laws, make everyone have to do a year in our Army after high school. Farming today is suffering from decades of bad press. People don't even know where hamburger or mashed potatoes come from. Farmers are now the bad guys spewing cancer causing round-up all over the place and torturing cows, pigs, chickens, and poor little dairy calves. No matter what your politics - you have to eat and I am willing to bet everything you eat comes from a Farmer or you grow it or get it yourself. Why kill the golden goose?
I'm a Farmer and I am on my local County Farm Bureau Board. You guys should be too if you can do it. You would be assets. There is a huge push back here in Central Illinois to get people out on farms and ride along with farmers planting and harvesting. It is making a difference. It is opening up roads of communication between people far removed from farming who's only access to it is their phone or computer and all the they see is negative ads from the humane society and companies like that. I have friends who won't eat chicken because of they saw a disgusting video of chickens being abused. When they come to my place they see how peaceful a farm is and how people work with their animals that they care about and it helps to change their mind. They still don't eat chicken but they eat eggs now where they would not before. It's an uphill battle but we are making progress here. Be a Farmer Advocate if you aren't already. Vote if you don not already.

Just passin through

Yes we will continue to see more dairy farms leave the business, especially here in WI where our average herd size is still below 200 cows. Sole owner and small partnership businesses in times like these can not fund health insurance, family living costs etc. with narrow margins on lower volume production. These very low prices come at a time when the farmers spend the most money for expenses to plant crops and harvest hay crops for the summer. Lenders were very cautious going into this winter with several low profit years and the early winter price outlook was for about $ 1.50 to $200 per CWT over last year and now it looks like it will be almost that much lower than last year for the short term. There is little equity left on many farms at this point in time. Land still has value if you can find good equity producers to buy or rent. The machinery, buildings, equipment, cows and heifers are at such low values there is little value in selling those assets. There would also be several of the larger dairies with considerable risk at this time as well. If many do leave the business that will increase dairy cow culling and adding to an already low beef price as there is not much interest at this time to put more cows in barns to milk them. Unlike hogs or poultry if major swings in production occur then it takes a long time for that to swing they other way.
