Good thing I don't buy meat. Oddly my cattle producing buddies say their prices are down. That is the amazing contradiction in all of this. The prices for live critters is falling, but the retail price of meat is rising. It is simply because the processing capacity is no longer available. I read earlier about an egg ranch in MN where they gassed 61,000 chickens in one day because they couldn't sell the eggs. That seems exactly backwards at this point to me. I would think the egg market would be strong. Just think of the lag time in bringing these types of products back on the market when this virus thing calms down. I would expect to see higher prices and limited availability for 6 months or more You are so right 6 months may even be optimistic apparently food production is non-essential

I wonder what this will do to salmon prices this summer? We were expecting a substantially lower price than last years due to a big catch last year that the processors paid too much for, and this year we are expecting a near record breaking salmon harvest as well. The company I sell my salmon to has a 100% US domestic market for frozen product (not a fresh/restaurant market). With less red and white meat being available I wonder if people will be eating more fish?

I would expect to see higher prices and limited availability for 6 months or more That's just flat out incorrect. It is not "simply because the processing capacity is no longer available." Four major firms, Cargill, Tyson Foods, JBS USA Food Co. and National Beef Packing, control more than 80% the nation’s beef processing plants. There is a history of price gouging, collusion, and corruption on behalf of these packers. They are using the Corona virus as an excuse to raise prices even more. Meat packers are making a profit of $600-$700 a head on fat cattle, based on the margins between the high prices for boxed beef versus what packers are paying producers for fat cattle on the hoof. Meanwhile, ranchers are losing several hundred dollars per head. They want independent ranchers to go out of business so that they can control the cattle industry just like they control sheep, chickens, and hogs. We need Country of Origin Labeling. Wisen up! Look at the bigger picture.

My father owns a diner, yesterday he tried to put in his weekly order with the wholesalers, Sysco-Maine's-etc. They were giving bacon away, I bought some thick sliced Hormel Apple wood for 25.00 for 15 pound cases, I got some jumbo wings for 1.25 a pound, and chicken breasts boneless for .99 a pound so we stocked up. Strange thing was, out of all the suppliers there was no availability of any ground beef to order. And also the price of boneless pork loins were steadily going up. Not a big deal at this point, as they have him shut down to just take out and he is down 85%, but it's going to be a heck of a mess when they start reopening and hopefully it picks back up so he can make a living.

It should be criminal to kill and bury a healthy pork or beef animal. Keep in mind the penalty for wanton waste of a wild game animal....? Somethin stinks and it ain't dead animals.

Part of the shutdown is likely a retributional response to Trumps tarrifs.

JBS is owned by Brazil. Their plant in Grand Island NE has 237 positive virus workers and are still running. Why should Brazil care what happens here?

What would you suggest they do when they can't get a processing plant to take them? Keep feeding overweight hogs and double down on your losses?

Give them to someone with the ability and desire to make use of them. Whatever numbers that is possible.

One of the meat processing plants here in Green Bay has been identified as a hot spot for COVID-19 cases. As I imagine many others will be soon. Yes, I saw that on the local news too. Why is that? I mean why is it that meat processing plants seem to be catching the virus faster than most all other businesses?

I mean why is it that meat processing plants seem to be catching the virus faster than most all other businesses? It apparently has something to do with the predominant race or immigration status of the workers at these processing plants. Since making any broad generalizations about race or immigration status would be called racist there can be no rational discussion about the cause or possible preventive measures.
