I decided to try my hand at hydro dipping a gun stock today. I had some leftover spray paint from painting my canoe and thought I'd give it a shot on my new Savage B17. I'm pretty happy with the results.
Basically you fill a tub or tote with enough water that you can submerge the stock and spray paint on top, then move the paint around to get the desired design. I did tape off a couple areas I didn't want paint then wiped the stock down with acetone and applied a primer first. Next one I do ill use a little more water and a little more paint, but I'm much happier with this look than the plain black synthetic. I also applied a clat clear top coat after the paint dried.
You can buy film kits to use, but this was essentially free and I'm perfectly happy with how it turned out.
Here's a video of someone else dipping a deer skull to give you an idea of the process.
Thanks guys. I have a Marlin 795 with a synthetic stock that will be next into the dip tank. Just need to pick up some more paint and clear coat before I can give it another go.
I do like the look of the laminated stocks. Still thinking of getting a Boyd's for my Remington 7600 .30-06. You could probably get something close with this method. I had to use a pretty big tote to fit the stock for the Savage, but I think I may build a basic frame with some scrap lumber and line it with a garbage bag that's a little more tailored to the size of the stock for the 795. That way there won't be as much paint waste and I'll have a little more control over the pattern. Already got the stock off and ready to do tomorrow, just need another can or two of paint.
I'll be making a frame tomorrow and using a large garbage bag to contain the water.
Canvasback22, if you want a specific pattern you need to buy the film. They do sell kits, though I didnt price them I bet they're probably $50+ depending on quality and quantity.
