Martentrapper. When the caribou have more fat than is needed I put some away for mixing with ground moose or even to add in to lean caribou later in the winter. And your right, that fat makes the meat so much better especially when cold weather hits.

Ive seen 21 moose so far but not a single shooter. 19 cows and calves, a couple 2 year old bulls. My dad is out looking today and I’ll be heading in a different direction later on. Some nice bulls taken past couple days by some of the buddies though.

And your right, that fat makes the meat so much better especially when cold weather hits. We do the same thing with both moose and caribou - not an ounce of fat is ever wasted. Winter times we take the fat around the guts. Just pull in off and throw on the snow and ready to put in your pocket (clean pocket lol) when you leave. People call it the "Deer's (caribou} apron" cause it is around the gut area where an apron would go. Good trail food any time you stop and want a quick bite just like it is. We eat a lot of the saved fat just raw too; same with good white marrow. Read in a lot of books about people trimming fat off wild meat - they throwing away the best part. I don't think they know what they are missing.

Rut is picking up. This bull had a bit of scent on him but just starting. Bull moose season 2020 was great.
