Exactly. I always thought you were supposed to catch critters across the pad not above the ankle. Never understood using a beaver trap to catch coyotes. I use 1.75 and 2s and see no need for a bigger trap. Explain to me how you catch coyotes across the pad when they are standing flat footed with their pad flat on the ground? Also have you thought about how high above the pan their ankle is when they are stand flat footed on the pan of trap?

IMHO, we have the best traps in history to choose from! Agree with Boone and Taxi, Red. The modern coils get my vote also. When the snow hits a larger trap is needed, here in lake effect country you learn to snow trap or you don't trap long.... Adapt or die... Snow trappin can be very productive as long as I can drive my truck to locations, or in Reds case a snowmobile like in Alaska or snowshoes. Sweep the snow off the sets and keep going.. Some years I trap the bulk with snow cover, makes micro location ID easy.. Back in the day most would pull when it snowed, I adapted and prospered..

The advantage of longsprings over coils in a land trap would be freezing down. The springs freeze down on a coilspring and it isn't going off, or is going off super slow, springs freeze down on a longspring and as long as the jaws aren't froze down it goes off just fine. Obviously none of them are going off if you have a frozen crust over the top so the critter isn't pushing the pan down. I use mainly coils on land along with waxed dirt both over and under the trap. But I like the longsprings at times because for me they are more reliable in freeze/thaw and I know a lot here will disagree with me, but I find them easier to bed solidly. I will say with the mb650s and 750s you better use the waxed dirt or your preference of freezeproof bedding liberally, that design of trap with the low profile of jaws down by the baseplate, held down on both sides with a dog rod that is also low and runs clear across under the trap, and add in the springs and levers all down flat like that are terrible bad to freeze down. Good traps, bed nice and flat and solid, but a lot of moving parts in contact with the ground, you really have to make sure that what they are in contact with is freeze proof.

I think what happens Is the first pull by that caught coyote gets some foot movement and It becomes a pad catch.

Key words gbus...as long as I can drive my truck to locations. That would mean firm ground and less than a foot of snow and those can be very productive conditions.
Sure snow trapping CAN be productive, especially when it is under 6 inches and it stays cold. But like I said, severe weather, like six inches of snow every day, is a waste of time. A foot of snow starts making things quite slow. You ain't driving all over the countryside in that or the mud after it melts 3 days later. Better remember where every ditch, muffler grabbing rock and log or mudhole on your line is, not to mention you better have a good handle or marker on your traps. If the weather stabilizes cold, snow is easy to work in. But here you get the snow, then a few days of freeze thaw and then your back to mud that freezes like concrete two days later, then back to snow.Maybe toss a little winter rain mix in there too. Repeat. No matter whether your using a 2 or 4, long or coil, you will start having sprung traps and educated canines in those conditions. I love those 7-10 day winter spans that are cold and snow on ground, especially when getting an inch or 2 top coating every day or every couple days, but they are few and far between here. It's sloppy freeze thaw more often than not.

If your coilsprings are freezing down you need to learn to make a winter set that can handle the weather.
And as far as chipping and chiseling out enough frozen ground to bury a long spring......heck no! Spot on

Farmdog it was not personal ,,, I personally feel a smaller trap is a handicap. A lot of years we start out here with snow in the first week of nov. .2 years ago 16 inch 2nd of November. And keeps snowing . A lot of guys start 10th of October counting on catching number to replace primeness.
