Dirt, trophy hunting is subsistence hunting in Alaska. For example, with a big game animal. You harvest that animal, Alaska law states you must salvage all edible meat(some units or spices you must salvage the hide, skull, horns or antlers). You don't want the meat you salvaged, so you "share" it with someone who wants it.You don't want the hide, so you sale it ("barter"). The horns, antlers, or skull you clean up and hang on the wall. By default of salvage requirements and what you can and can't do with salvaged edible meat you fit the definition of subsistence uses. Hense you were subsistence hunting (AS 16.05.940(33)).

However, a trophy hunter may decide not to make a harvest. That was the big problem here. If he doesn't harvest game, because the trophy standard is not met.( not because the opportunity wasn't there) or he gets out too late because of weather and all them trophy's have dropped those trophies, none of those subsistence uses happen. The resource is not utilized for subsistence uses.

I will not even touch on the sensitive subject of poor salvage practices that resulted in all our meat on bone requirements.

I have pictures for proof. frown

I agree, a subsistence/trophy hunters do not always take every opportunity to harvest, that is a decision every hunter makes. Also agree with the very poor salvage of some.
