Me and a buddy were just talking about going half on a hog. What are prices for a dresses hog ready to deliver to the butcher in Wisconsin?

My niece and friends just butchered 10 hogs. I asked her why so many and she told me they where given to them for free, just get them off the farm. They're freezers are full for a while now.

Pigs are super easy to do at home, as long as you have a place to hang them, and you can keep them cool. I just did two last weekend, the weather was perfect. Low 30s at night, upper 40s the day of butchering. There's lots of videos on YouTube, but pretty much any 4 legged mammal breaks down the same. The guy I got a he pigs from said the local lockers are booked until at least August, some are booked well into next year. We paid .50 cents per pound live weight.

Crap I am out of town, any of you thinking a $25 free hog sounds good should take advantage of the Tman promo at my back bedroom Airbnb in RR Seguin TX. Hogs are totally free but you better be handy with the traps or lead spitters because me and my kind already ate all the dumb ones.

Oh and sorry, the airbnb now has only one bedroom because dudes dont camp in my room and the 2nd BR is for fishing and kayaking gear. I keep it nice b/c that is how I sort the internet hotties. If they claim to be good ol country girls who love the outdoors I hand them a rod and push their yak into the Rapids. Basically I do everything I can to make them honest LOL

You guys doing hogs yourself......

Scalding/scraping or skinning?

Boning out the cuts or using a meat saw on cuts that normally include some bones? Saving the ribs, butts, hams, etc?

Curing hams, bellies, jowls?

What about the lard?

Or how many are just boning out and grinding up the whole hog?

I skin, so that I can put the hide over my fleshing beam and scrape it with my fleshing knife to get all the fat off for lard. The skin will then dry up into a big hairy piece of rawhide in the sun, and the dog will go crazy over it.
I cut most bones out, but then roast them in the oven and boil them for hours to make stock. It's good enough to drink all on its own on a cold winter day.
I cure my own hams, it's super easy, and you can control salt and sugar levels and glazes easily.
Front legs get cut up into fist size chunks and frozen, in five pound chunks. Then it can be ground up for sausage or chunked up and used in pork and beans etc.
Belly gets cut into four sections that can either be turned into bacon or ground for sausage.

I'll never scald another hog.

I cure my own bacon, its so much cheaper than what you buy in the store. I haven't cured a ham yet, but its on my "to do list"
