Lugnut I had a cutco knife similar to yours but it lacked the gut hook and had a black handle .... Was a very sharp knife ... Wish I could find it ...

Lugnut I don't do very much cutting at all inside the cavity in most cases we cut the throat then can pull everything.

I make my son do his own deer to learn , but I gut the deer for most of our hunting party. my dad is like the 6 million dollar man in all the surgeries and replacement parts he has but sure doesn't move like the 6 million dollar man.

I really dislike working blind with a razor sharp knife next to my hand. I will try and get hold of the wind pipe if it does need more than just a pull and pull as far back on it as I can then slip the right hand with knife up into the cavity and cut then the knife is back out before I cut my self.

I haven't really used the gut hook knife in several years I lost the sheath for it at some point or maybe it is in a box around here but I haven't seen it in some years.

I am by no means sold on the gut hook or promoting it as one of my favorites.

I have a couple of mora's and a cold steel that have been doing deer dressing duties the last few years , if I loose one I don't even have to feel too bad just spend 10-15 more dollars on another

I agree, you really have to pay attention to what your doing, to where your free hand is in relation to the knife when you're working blind. The windpipe is usually the problem, get that cut and everything else usually pulls out.

I never cut throats, seems like an easy way to detach the trachea. I might give that a try on the next one.

I use an old drop point folder for gutting deer. That style blade makes it easy to zip open the belly skin without knicking the guts.

I think Cutco offers free sharpening for life on knives you buy directly from them. That's good because I wouldn't have the first clue how to sharpen the serrated edge on the one my buddy got me.

I like the orange handle, keeps me from searching too long to find a knife I laid in the leaves while gutting a deer.

if i'm cutting it up--i like to be the gutter.my problem is about every other deer i don't have a knife with me and have to go back for one.

send it in and they'll shine it up,sharpen it and get it back to ya.if not they will replace it.

Yes, Cutco/Kabar is an excellent company. I met the owner once while having dinner with a friend at Sprague's, he's a nice guy.

gut hooks can be kinda nice but I agree just something else hanging off a knife kind of a distraction from the tool.

I tried the tail splitter type , some called belly zippers , it all just seemed like too much to carry , any sharp knife worked well enough , it isn't like your gutting a stack of deer. even when I am gutting for everyone in the party it is seldom more than 2 at a time or 5-6 in a weekend.
the at most minute saved is hardly making up for the having to dig out the tool and have another thing to wash later.

I do carry a folding utility knife with a hook blade , it is small folds and keeps in a pocket well. that is handy.

MY son was telling me yesterday he had a nice knife that he found while skiing this winter.

He said it was a yard sale!!??! Thats what the skiers call it when someone goes down over a jump and crashes.

All thier stuff is spread out everywhere. And usually not retreaved.

I got these about 10–12 years ago. I toured the factory about eight years ago, very interesting all the steps it takes to make a quality knife.

spinnin them leather handles for 10 yrs is the reason my elbows pop like they do.made the collecter club knifes also.

My kabar is my go to knife for processing deer .... Holds a great edge and only needs to be sharpened once a year ...
