Looking at river boats and I'm coming across some Stick Steering boats.
Never seen and never used .
Almost tiller exclusive for me.
Any experience and advice is very welcome.
Want it to be the last boat I ever buy my Grandson.
(Helping my ex raise are 2 grandchildren.)

Are you talking jet boat vs prop?

a wheel moves a cable that pushes motor side to side , the same cable can be moved with a lever and take up less space for fishing .

I have seen them but not used one personally

Most makers of riveted jons offered a version of "panfish special" rig. Usually a 12-14 foot jon flat or semi vee. Most often rigged with a fore and aft pedestal seat with combo cooler/livewell with cushion in the center. Steering is done from the from with throttle on the right, stick tiller on the left.
Comfortable rigs to fish out of but not a flashy tournament rig. There most often seen with 25-45 hp props. Due to seating they may not haul as much as an open tiller steer but they do spread weight better so may be usefully in a jet or shallow water application.
The only real drawback is sticks usually can't handle the sort of feedback big hp outboards deliver but if you're running big hp you need the proper rig to handle it anyway.

Yes GreenCountryPete ;
That is it exactly .
Thanks for the info Warrior.

It will be river fishing almost exclusively.
He is obsessed with Small Mouth Bass, Walleye, and cat fishing at night.
Sometimes fishing local lakes for large mouth bass
Looks to me like it would be great for him.
Thinking 25 -40 HP should be fine.
Appears to be a drive from the front type boat,
Reminds me of an air boat type of ride.
Was just wondering about any issues I might consider.
Thx again for your input.

Had a V I P bass boat years ago with stick steering. Once you get used to it it is no real issue. It never had any issues that a steering wheel didn't have. It was drive from the front which takes a little getting used to. I took it all over rivers and some big lakes. Taledo Bend, Lake Fork, some in Florida.

In the 70's Bomber made a "bass boat" with front steer. ( I think it was bomber anyway) It was a stick that moved forward and backward. I bought one real cheap. it was a 16 ft boat with a 90HP merc. The absolute worst boat I have ever sat in. To say it was dangerous would be an understatement. Only boat I ever wanted a seat belt to hold me in the seat. Needless to say I didn't keep it long.

In the 80's I was comm. fishing in Tn. Most of us ran 16-20 ft river jons with stick steering. Mine was an 18 ft polar craft. Heavy duty boat with a 75 merc on it. later I put a 115 hp merc on it. The steering was nothing but an axe handle bolted to a seat with cables running back to the engine. It moved from side to side, not forward or backwards. Worked great. I wish I had kept that boat really.

My advice would be make sure the helm seat is far enough back in the boat that you don't get tossed out everytime you hit a wave or wake.

I kinda got that feeling first time I got on a zero turn commercial type lawnmower, so i'll be checking.
Thx again
