KSnow.....do you like a separate strap for your powdah Horn.....or perfer the Horn attached to the bag strap ? Separate. A lot of times I just grab a roll of patching and a handful of round ball and put them in a pocket for a primitive shoot or an afternoon of rabbit hunting. I just sling my horn over my shoulder, no shooting pouch necessary. Plus, there is a ton of historical evidence for separate and that is important to me.

Scott and Cathy make beautiful horns. Their book is where I learned the basics of making them. The golden age of horns was from the late period of the French and Indian war to the revolution, before the golden age of the rifle. Those horns were engraved, engrailed, had rings applied, threaded spouts, all kinds of fancy. As time moved on, horns got more plain. Engraving seems to almost disappear completely after 1820ish. You still see some, but not many.

Very Nice! Do you make the staples from heavy wire? Also wondering what the wood is? is it Butter Nut? Seen some Sumac once had that look too.

Mac I make the staples from whatever I have on hand. These are made from 2" casing nails. I've used coat hanger wire, old trap rings, fence staples, etc. It is butternut, good eye. We had a huge butternut we cut down at the gun club and I saved a bunch of the bigger chunks for little projects. There are some bug holes int, but that just adds character.
