Government Beef Chip Stew...

OMG!!! They were handing out food to people, who could not get to the store. You know; the OLD FOLKS !! Somehow , I ended up with 2 boxes of GOVERNMENT BEEF CHIP STEW !! So....


I opened the US SURPLUS MRE "ENTREE" :/, put it in the saucepan , and heated it up...

Didn't smell bad....

Got it heated up , and tossed some in the Dinner plate...

Then I tasted it...……...……...………….





Words I cannot type, but, lets just say that the stew was, in a word.....

TERRIBLE !!!

That's why our health care is paid for when we retire. At least you got to heat it up...

When calories are essential, taste many times takes a back seat. When in Nam someone made an food ordering error and we got about twice the liver we were supposed to get and 4 times the cans of cooked cabbage. This was at the main base. A lot of guys ate their pre packaged meals for a few weeks.

Once you find a piece of cow lip, chewy and with hair follicles then you flip that to the side and finish the MRE you know your hungry.

I got some pictures somewhere of our "hot" meal we would would get out in our JSS in baghdad. I think we called it filleted face. Thin meat covered in bbq sauce. Dont wipe the bbq sauce off because if you did you would notice the nice shiny sheen of green in the meat.

The only meal ive had i couldnt eat was when i was starving enough to eat with the iraqi army guys one night. We didnt have food so they offered to share. It was a plate of beans. No clue what kind of beans, some weird haji stuff. Nothing but just a big spoon of watery beans you just couldnt choke down to save your life. I decided i wasnt starving as bad as i thought. Those weirdos were eating it easy enough.

I have had old vietnam era c rats and about every 90's to 2000's MRE they make and they are 10x better than that plate of iraqi beans i tried to eat.

Jus put hot sauce on it ... enough of it will drown out the bad taste. Put some T paper in the freezer for later. They wrote a song about that. It was called the burning ring of fire

3 fingers my favorite one was similar to yours it was the beef patty one I must of ate a 100 of them in Iraq

I think I can probably speak for most GI's of the Vietnam era. We thought about food a hundred times more than women !

I actually preferred C-rats to any hot food that might be available. Along with hot chow came a healthy serving of dysentery.

Heating rations was the manifold of a D7.

I liked the meatballs in spicy tomato sauce, but my men would take them from me when I got them. I could clear the entire AO after eating those.
