Not my normal thing but I though it would be fun to make a trap spring knife. What kind of profile do you guys think is cool? Beaver skinner? Beef skinner? Bushcraft? Thinking I can get one medium and one small knife out of it.

Interesting finger choil. I tend to like them on my knives but I've never used one on a skinner before.

The old timers made crooked knives out of trapsprings. They left the curve in the spring to make the knife. Then they could use it to make fur stretchers snowshoes toboggans and even birchbark canoes.

That's a great idea. I've got a second spring. Was that based on the old beaver tooth tool? Some large ash got blown down this spring I'm going to use for bows and snowshoes.

Boco has a good idea. Google "crooked knife". It is one of the handiest knives in the bush.

I’ll second the sharpfinger that the Kraut suggested.

I’d still like the knife I picked though.

In recent years I've been leaning towards the sheep siding design of knife blade for my skinning needs for big game animals and even for skinning coyotes for that matter.
But in all honesty since it's your knife that you'll be using make it a sharp one ha ha

I’m with scuba on this one. Sharp finger style would be handy.

So is the crooked knife held palm up and sharp edge toward user? looks like there are a lot of ergonomics to consider. Should be a fun one.

I don't think the thickness of a trap spring lends itself to a bushcraft knife, which tend to be rather heavy. The sharp finger sounds like a good idea to me.

A five inch version of the Cold Steel Red River/Western Hunter skinner pattern. With a bog oak handle done in the basket weave and brass pin as seen of regimental sgain dubhs and dirks, capped in pewter with elk ivory inset pommel.

PM me for my shipping address. LOL

I'm no craftsman.

Made this with a piece of scrap maple, a dremmel tool, a drill press, and a worksharp. Its a very serviceable tool in spite of its looks. That trap spring steel (old victor) holds an edge reasonably well and sharpens up easy. This is the blade shape I like for pelting.

That's a real nice bird and trout.

It's about as thick as my mora but I agree.

Lol! You like um fancy! I'd probably use new steel for something like that. I wouldn't consider a trap spring knife a high end knife. Just a little something fun. I've got some 80crv2 and 1080 we can play with later.

Jonny trapper, I really like your thread. I have a 20 " lawn mower blade. I wonder if I could make a knife out of that.

You can. It's fun to make knives out of scrap and I do it but steel is so cheap and available these days. The fun part about the trap spring or RR spike kinda knife is leaving the ring or the head so it keeps it's history so to speak. If you make a knife from a mower blade it doesn't add any value. One thing a mower blade is ideal for is a big brush/root chopper. It's tough steel and if it doesn't maintain a fine edge who cares.
