Asked the neighbor kid if he wanted to go for a turkey if so send for a mentor tag. Today was looking good mild winds, the last several days were higher winds. We got on a flock but they were still grouped up looked to be 12 gobblers and about 1/2 dozen hens surprising for this late in the season. They gobbled but stayed on the roost well after sunup. Worked them until they flew down then they got quiet. We worked our way around to the other flat on top of the draw and found the group up in the flats. 3 gobblers were strutting for a hen near the edge the kid and I worked to within 40 yards and he dropped a nice gobbler with 1 shot. 21lb 9" beard nice first bird for the young man, he was good in the woods and moved well in the thick cover he moved around a bit but overall I was impressed.

12 longbeards running together? That’s crazy!! My thoughts exactly this late in the season it sounded like another big group across the main draw also. On the way over to the State highway seen a smaller group strutting for a hen there too.

lawdog that is more than cool that you are giving time to kids and hunting for the sake of hunting. letting the kid take the bird.

God bless and happy trails, Swampfox Thanks I was Itching to work a bird with the extended season this year for some reason, most years it ends around the 21st. Gave him some BDUs, camo hat, shells and a old turkey vest to keep now that he’s a turkey Hunter. Breasted it out for him then kept his wings I’ll make him a wing bone call later this week with the date painted on it. Was a Good day for both of us.

Congrats to you and the neighbor kid Law Dog. I love hearing stories like this. Agreed Lugnut It is up to us older hunters to past on what we can to youngsters and even other older aged people looking to go hunting . I believe there are still a lot of non hunters that would give it a try if someone offered .And I will tell everyone that will listen ,Every hunter remembers the first person that takes them hunting
