so I planted this bed from roots last spring and they cam up pretty well . This spring a couple roots produced 3-4 sprouts but the late snow we got killed them off. now just one sprout per root. with the exception of one that has 2.

what should I do during this season to improve the bed? not going to harvest any this year or next.

thanks for any advice given......and no a pig castrater won't work I already looked it up..

They are said to be heavy feeders. I'd compost the heck out of'em and let them grow.

10-10-10 fertilizer, keep it weeded, water heavy twice a week, when all plants turn completely brown, cut of at ground

compost and mulch

my grandparents had large asparagus beds they would mow the ferns in the late fall when the leaves had dropped and mulch with leaves ground up with the lawn mower the shoots push right up through the leaf mulch

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I wish I could add some info. But I'm gonna be watching this thread.. I'm starting out with 5 roots in a big container about the size of a half a 55 gallon barrel.

Looks like you’ve got a great little start there. Just let them go, this fall cut everything back ad 1/2- to 1inch of compost and add a couple inches of wood chips to protect them for the winter.

I’d add more roots this year. I plant mine end to end, so you can fit a lot more in there.
I’m curious why the need for support? Anyone else support theirs? I’ve never seen it required, even at over 5’ tall. Maybe different type?

The brown fern of the fall make for some nice planter add-in for fall displays. Just let them expand for next year. Year three is your picking year. Upside down- Dark garbage containers over the bed and you can pick white spears in the spring, adds a new twist to a salad.
