Hey gents,
I was asked If I could make a few knives and sheaths for the holidays (its never too early to get started). Normally, my knives are made from obsidian or stone, so this is something new to me. I've done a quick google search, and what I have found looks mostly like cheap Chinese stainless steel. Is there anywhere a feller could get a few knife blanks that will actually hold an edge? American made would be nice too.

Thanks,
Pintail.

track of the wolf sells several different styles of knife blanks. It is a muzzleloader and primitive supply place

X2

I like the Russel Green River Blanks from Track of the wolf, I have made a few USA made decently priced and good carbon steel will take an edge.

this is one

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I agree that Texas Knifemakers Supply is great. These folks sell some great carbon blades at a very real price. https://www.kellamknives.com/

I like the semi-skinner shape but it all depends non how you want to put the wood to the metal. The Finnish blades are not the same as the average American blank but they are a joy to sharpen and use.

Knife blades I've done a few with the Norweigen steel blades and they take and hold a good edge. The Green River blades are good too. I have several for kitchen service. You can put a handle on a Green River in a couple of hours tops and have a knife that will take a shaving sharp edge for $10-15 bucks. I think that's a deal that's hard to beat.

Some research and yard/junk sales will yield some good older steel. Reshape, resharpen, new handles....or don’t. Many will have a patina you won’t want to grind away or rehandle. Old guns and knives feel alive.
