My son & I drew our Wyoming Elk tags and looking for a decent boot with 400 grams of insulation and goretex. How are the Danner Pronghorns ? Or another style that you guys use. Looked at Kennetrek but are a tad pricey

I can't wear pronghorns they kill my feet.

I spent a bunch of money last year on boots and work out shoes and have settled on crispi boots. Great support and i can hike day after day. Cost some $ but worth it imo

I have a pair of Danner Pronghorns, leather, 400 grams insulation and gore tex. They are ok but the pair I have doesn't have a loop in the back top to grab when I am sliding them on. I have a high instep and use that loop on most boots.

I had a pair, hurt my feet and leaked like screen wire. I was glad they fell apart. I started wearing Merrell's and wear them all the time because they are so comfortable. I don't have any of their winter rated boots but the waterproof hikers are fantastic, wore them on an elk hunt. They are light weight and easy to break in.

It seems like a lot of things the danner pronghorn quality has really gone down in last decade. First pair a decade ago were pretty decent boots for the money, last pair 4 years ago was much cheaper, leather almost felt plasticy or something and seams started giving out pretty quick along with waterproofness. I would look at crispi, scarpa, kenetrek, zamberlan, salomon quest 4d(uninsulated), Lowa before I’d get another pair of pronghorns.

I've got irish setters and love them, on my 3rd pair.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I think you are unlikely to find anyone who can accurately answer your question. Danner changed the last (foot mold) the Pronghorn was made on a few years ago, enlarging the toe box and narrowing the heel. This made them better perhaps for the hunter sitting in a stand but not very good for the hunter on his feet. The new configuration apparently did not sell well because recently Danner has been advertising that the old Pronghorn is back - they went back to the old last. So anyone who has bought Pronghorns in the past 4-5 years has a different Pronghorn than they are selling now. Observations made relative to quality I expect are accurate and apply across the product line.

I bought a pair of insulated Wolverines back in 2016 for an elk hunt when my 15 year old Pronghorns were shot and I didn't want to spend $400 for new boots. They are light, comfortable, water tight and still in service, but I only wear them hunting so they don't get a lot of wear. I also took my uninsulated Asolo hiking boots as a back-up on that elk hunt, just in case the China made Wolverines fell apart, but the Wolverines did fine.

Irish Setters used to be my go-to hunting boot. They were comfortable, warm, stayed dry and lasted a good long time. Then they outsourced to China and quality went way down. My last pair of Elk trackers leaked like a sieve right out of the box and I got zero satisfaction from customer service.

I'm glad you guys are having good luck with them but I stopped buying them.

Eh...wot?

Had a pair for pheasant hunting in South Dakota. Killed my feed and caused planters fascitis. Painful as (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman). My two cents - don't buy them.

I've had Danner Pronghorns. Always comfortable, but the later version did not hold up nearly as well as the earlier ones. I think the early ones were made in the USA and the newer ones were imports.

I had a few pair of them and nevah had any issues, other then wearing them out. I go through boots pretty fast regardless of the cost of them. I'm in heavy brush, sage and a lot of rough county and it doesn't matter what brand I wear out the toe area from the terrain I'm in.

As far as being water proof I would say they aren't even if they are said to be. Saying that, I haven't bought any brand that says their boot is water proof, they all leak like a sieve. That is one of the most irritating thing for me when you pay good money for a boot and they are suppose to be water proof and they leak. It doesn't matter the cost of that boot. I'm not talking all rubber boot either.

I used to wear Danner Pronghorns and they were always comfortable. They were great for flat lands but not good in the mountains. I have switched to better boots (in my opinion) such as Lowa and Hanwag. More expensive but better ankle control and much better boot for side-hilling and such along a steep slope. Hard to hunt if your feet hurt.

Congrats on the WY elk tag.

Congrats on the tags. Should be awesome for you. I wear boots every day all day and I have had multiple danners, I’ve had kennetreks and they are good boots but for all around comfort, durability and price, the Irish setters are hard to beat. I’ve had 3 pair of Irish setter elk trackers, and all 3 have been re-soled and worn down to slick, because the uppers lasted so long. Have nothing but good things to say about them.

I bought a pair of Meindel boots from cabela's a few years ago. They are 400 gram thinsulate and waterproof. they feel very good on my feet and are very light. They weren't terribly expensive either

My pronghorns are comfortable and have given me no problems . I wear them during archery season in September so not much wet weather . They are imported though I think

They have a line of USA made boots too

I have a pair of these for October and November hunts ..... colder wetter

These are pricey but I was fortunate to have worked on a new danner store and they generously gifted me a pair
