I'm aiming for weasels this coming season but I'm thinking I'll have to travel to Minnesota/Wisconsin border to find them. I live near 20 and anyone I've talked to seems to think here aren't any around. I thought I saw a couple on the shoulder of a couple gravel roads a few weeks ago, but I believe now they were ground squirrels.

What species would be there-longtailed or shorttails?

There are plenty of weasels in Iowa .

According to the DNR they are Least Weasels. The fact sheet says they're spread throughout the state, but it's disconcerting that no one I've talked to believes we have them. I set a couple traps in grass along tree lines near water and only got a few mice. I suppose more traps would certainly help.

Care to share any areas in the Eastern part of the state? Even broadly?

We have them here but they are rarely seen they love thicker cover.

Thicker cover is a good call, thanks. There are some fen fields around and some 6'+ grass fields. I'll give those a shot for sure.

Tree belts, sloughs, Creeks, plum thickets any idle edges hold the learn their tracks and you will run across them.

We have weasels here, most people have never seen one. There tracks are common and coon hunters and callers will see them at night. occasionally. If you want to catch them, go where the mice are, round bales,haystacks and such.

I am sure lots of places have weasels. It is a well know fact that the largest concentration and population of weasels is in Washington DC.

Yep a lot more than people think. I've never targeted them but I've caught three incidentally in SE Iowa. Thing is they are all least weasels around here so most people who see them think they are just big mice.

Saw one here running up from the pond and drainage ditch across the yard.
Took a bit to figure out what it was.
Their body is so supple that it ripples as they run.

I caught one gopher trapping, came from underground so it was running the tunnels.
