My grandpa and I are gonna predator trap and don’t have many predator traps and all he has is his 1 1/2 4 coiled coil springs standard jaw no shock springs. I am gonna use offset Bridger 1 3/4 OS coil spring

The 1 3/4 are a better choice.Coyotes can be pretty rough on a 1 1/2s. I have held coyotes in 1 1/2s but not my trap of choice.

Yes it may hold a coyote... reliably catch after catch i dont know and it might get beat up. And also your trap placement has to be dead on

X2 on 2cylinder
I play the bigger is better game most times and I dont like offsets that much.
Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

Trap sizes are all over the board. A 1 3/4 is the same jaw spread as a number three longspring. A 1 1/2 coil is real close to a number two longspring. The number system for traps is totally screwed up, especially for new guys that haven't been around it very long. That said, I have caught lots of yotes in 1 1/2 size coils. Trapping fox back in the day, I had many yotes have a bad day and rode home with me. I set up my 1 1/2's with #2 coils and bent up the jaw pivots and had six inches of good chain with a center swivel. Don't remember ever losing a coyote out of a 1 1/2. Lots of them caught by the front two toes and held on a three day check. That said, I hate catching fox in a big trap, it is just hard on them, but in coyote country, I'd never set a 1 1/2! A 1 3/4 is a better choice, but I still don't rate it a coyote trap. You will have a lot of dogs chewed off, and other problems, especially with. big eastern yotes. Four coiling on little traps is just a waist of time and energy!

Agree with everything Lee said.Back in the 70's when we had lots of Fox and few coyotes I put no.2 springs in my stock 11/2 could and never lost a coyote, but it's hard on the trap.Bent dogs, jaws distorted, pan shanks bent but I never lost one.You will have a lot of misses, that's a mighty small kill area compared to a no.3 or 4.Having said that I have a lot of respect for the 11/2 coil, the trap wasn't made for what we put it thru but it held up.

Caught a bunch in 1.5 Montgomery round jaw. Bent dog every now and then but overall no problems.

Save your lawn mowing and leaf raking money and get traps designed for coyotes. Yes, you’ll pay a lot more than you will trying to beef up a 1 1/2 coil, but you won’t have to bend them back into shape after every catch. Even if you can only afford 4-8 traps. Using a trap design for coyotes will pay you in the end.
Never too old to learn

Yeah, the amount of abuse the trap that size will take depends on the make. Those Montgomerys were heavy duty and had a awesome set of springs.Northwood were pretty beefy too.The Victor and Blake and Lamb from that time period were really lightweight, but in fairness, the thought behind them at the time were more along the lines of mink and coon.
