No pigs in this area of remote Western Montana, so can't be a fancy castrator. Lots of fearful sheep, but that's about it. I'm thinking maybe a fish weir? Saw it while I was fishing today in the Rocky Mountains. It was on one of the forks of a river. Also saw lots of wildlife including a grizzly, a moose, lots of deer, ruffed grouse and spruce grouse.

No idea what that is but sounds like you had a great day. Jealous, I did some flashing on dormers at cousins cabin and then cut firewood..

Keith No salmon in this river/tributary. Possibly a bull trout counter?

I'm still looking for the river. LOL... out west some "rivers" you can nearly jump/cast across, to me, they were creeks or streams. Took me a bit to adjust when I lived out there after being raised in the east where you cannot cast across a "river". I think it simplifies G&F info by naming headwaters the same

It is a screw trap for counting smolts. Yes. I used to see these on the Lochsa and some of the tributaries when I worked in Idaho.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Keith Yes it is a counter by DNR.
