Monday as I was reading at my desk a gusher of blood started from my nose. I don't mean drip-drip-drip, but one big GUSHER of blood. Don't have a clue how it started, but I couldn't get it stopped.
We had to go to the hospital ER, and it took them three tries to get it stopped, using an inflatable long tube they shoved WAY up my nostril. Yuch, what a mess! I looked like I'd been run over by a truck or had just finished butchering a moose.
At least I didn't have to wear a Covid mask, though everyone else in the ER did.

Wait till it’s bad enough to cauterize. You’ll swear they’re trying to brand your brain.
Yea, butchering a moose is right, like you starred in a horror flick. Glad they got it under control and you’re good to go, it’d get boring around here without you.

Wishing you the best James. I have only had a small nosebleed. Any idea what the cause was ?

Had a few in my younger days. Diagnosed the cause, a direct connection to stupid crap spewing from my lips. Got my mouth under control, and the bloody noses stopped. Occasional black eyes seem to stop also.

I never had one before until one day at work, sitting at my desk. I couldn't stop it. Went home and a few hours later had my wife drive me to urgent care center. My PB was 210 over something, my wife would remember the numbers. I went by ambulance to the ER. The worry is that if your BP is high enough to pop a vessel in your nose, it's high enough to pop one in your brain.
Got an IV to bring down the BP. That took 6 hours. They packed my nose - nothing. Cauterized it - which felt like they put out a cigarette in my nostril - nope. They then put in this gigantic packing. I spent the night.
The next morning an ENT came in, pulled the packing and filled my nostril with what looked and felt like silicone caulk. It even came in a caulking tube.
I'm on BP medicine now, I watch my salt, I'm losing some weight. Seems to be under control now.
But nose bleeds can be a sign of something serious.

James,
Are you on any type of blood thinner?
My dad had double by pass heart surgery at the young age of 85. They put him on blood thinners after the surgery. He was recuperating in the nursing home when he had a bad nose bleed. He spent the next week in the intensive care unit at the hospital because of loss of blood and the fact that they couldn't get it to stop bleeding for very long. They put a rhino rocket up his nose and that helped but as soon as they tried to remove it he bled like a stuck pig again. Finally they changed his medication and with the help of a nose specialist they got the problem fixed. He has been fine the last 2 years.

Put ice in a ziplock and hold it on the back of your neck and more ice on the bridge of your nose, it's crazy how well it works to stop nose bleeds.

I never had a bad nose bleed, but with the blood thinners I am on now I would hate to think of getting one. It is scary to think it started while you were reading. Do they have any idea why it started?
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.
