My son is moving his family--WITH OUR GRANDKIDS--to the Coeur d'Alene area.
What's it like around there? Hunting, fishing, trapping opportunities?
Taxes? Cost of living? Medical services?

It is a typical fairly low key sprawling town , as Nancy says, has very good medical facilities, commutable over the border into Spokane WA., to more of the same.
A suburban feel , with access to the big lakes and countryside close enough just outside city limits.
The Tman Tribe's beloved Jack goes there to give his amazing wolf classes for certification to trappers. Idaho Trappers Association are a wonderful bunch of people.
Places to eat out, not known for junky looking areas.
I prefer much larger mountains , but CDA isnt a bad place if that sort of habitat is what they will want.
Years... years ago the old stories about the white supremacists-who had their compound out of Hayden , an adjacent town, have long been disbanded.
The 15 years I lived in that general area , though in the country, I never once heard of any skirmish in news about them.
You will have to pay visit to CDA, Minka. It isn't bad at all , for the type town/suburbs they desire to live.

Thanks for the comments, all. Yeah, Sharon, we'll have to visit.
Would it be better to live in Washington or Idaho in that area?
If there are a bunch of Californians moving in, I'm inclined to overlook the place. They tend to ruin wherever they set foot en masse.

The area for the rich and famous. A beautiful place but it takes money to live there.

Jim Not no but HECK no !! I can't get out of that Spokane area fast enough. Hot, dirty, old, crowded, traffic. My heart and BP normalize when I cross out of WA

I have lived here for 60 years(50 miles north). Right now house and land prices are skyrocketing. If you are conservative at all you probably will want to stay away from it,Sandpoint and Moscow. Go east 20 miles and you will be in the silver valley which is much more reasonable to live in and it is very conservative. You don't have to get to far from the towns and big lakes to get to rural areas that are gods country. Idaho is a right to work state so wages are low but there are a lot of help wanted signs out. We have lots of whitetails and decent elk and bear hunting. Some moose and mule deer. Cougar and wolves are abundant. In the small game category lots of turkeys, 3 species of forest grouse and snowshoe hares. Our fur bearer populations aren't super high but you can catch enough to keep most people happy. If you are visiting send me a p.m. I would enjoy meeting for a cup of coffee. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Ted

The Silver Valley and surrounding areas are I feel much prettier , quieter, nicer in country life than within town city limits. So many places are commutable from town. The best of both worlds. Exploring rural areas around CDA is a great adventure. In minutes one can be as private with no traffic as a roadless area. Just because there are roads doesn't mean everyone driving is coming down the driveway. The best of in town living , in access to amenities and productive life, and the best of remote living , private and quiet . Just a matter of a bit of looking. Which is done best by getting there , renting for a bit and being able to have your thumb on the pulse of real estate, or living places opening for offers. Life enjoyed....no time to waste, is worth happiness.
