are they legal? Hard to tell if a rat trap counts as a body gripper. If not what other methods can be used to successfully trap them.

Many of the weasel as far south as New Jersey and southern NYS do not fully turn white in the winter. So they may not be too much fun to trap. I would check with Eric Space who is from your state and is also on this forum.
