I used to have a 20 gauge 870 express youth that I used for children and women. I had a Hastings extra full choke tube in it. It was almost too tight at 20 yards and under. I used 3 inch number 6 Federal loads in it.
I shoot a Youth model 870 20ga with a custom choke and FFIII for optics. When I take kids I just give them my gun to use and tell them to put the red dot where ugly meets pretty. None have missed yet, or complained about the kick. Before a buddy started rolling TSS I used Hevi13 #7’s. Using TSS #9’s now.
I have a Grand Slam with that little gun with the farthest shot at 53yds. Hard to judge distance in wide open prairies, lol. Easily maneuverable and light weight for long treks and steep mountains.
I just read a good article about how a set up 410 is a great gobble gun because of its tight pattern.
How is a .410 pattern any tighter than a larger gauge? I have heard this from several people "my .410 shoots like a rifle". Pattern size is controlled by choke, not bore size. Get some paper and shoot some patterns to determine the effectiveness of ANY shotgun.
My son's first shotgun was a Remington 870 Youth model. Here he is patterning it for the turkey season('05). I had a a vinyl decal made for it to always remind him, Safety First! The Remington 870 is renowned for reliability.

Its not any tighter, no one said it was. But using TSS shot they’re turkey killing machines that will allow kids to easily kill a turkey at 30 yards without any fear of recoil. And .410 TSS #9 shot shell has 300 pellets, so its a heck of a swarm.

I have an 12 gauge Wingmaster with a Hastings 640. It's a gobblers worst nightmare, but as I get older a lighter gun is in my forecast. The TSS shot sounds like the real deal...a swarm of 9s that act like a payload of 5s would be nice

If recoil is an issue I would go with a 301T in 410. Tss #9.5 or 10 will kill farther than you should be shooting at them. If recoil isn't an issue I would go with a 500 in 20ga. Not sure about factory shells but you can hand load 1.25 oz of tss on the lite side and the recoil is very managable. my 500 20 has a few loads that it likes. The 1.625oz load of tss 9 for the longer shots, hevi 13 (close stuf) and a reload of lead 6 or 7.5 (again, for the less than 30 yard shots). If I sit down in a spot that I know the shot will not be more than 30 yards I can just slip a reload or a hevi 13 in the chamber istead of changing chokes.
I have a couple 410s that I let the kids use and a 20ga for the bigger kids. I will admit that I have taken the 410s out quite a bit.
