Got a fat bull a week ago. That far makes for better meat I think. Some other folks shot a bou that was the biggest bodied bou I've ever seen. Gonna be looking for moose in another couple weeks!

Martentrapper. When the caribou have more fat than is needed I put some away for mixing with ground moose or even to add in to lean caribou later in the winter. And your right, that fat makes the meat so much better especially when cold weather hits.

Ive seen 21 moose so far but not a single shooter. 19 cows and calves, a couple 2 year old bulls. My dad is out looking today and I’ll be heading in a different direction later on. Some nice bulls taken past couple days by some of the buddies though.

Sonny, his boy Arthur and their partner Darius called this one out with willow raking and a few calls. Good hunting!

We do the same thing with both moose and caribou - not an ounce of fat is ever wasted. Winter times we take the fat around the guts. Just pull in off and throw on the snow and ready to put in your pocket (clean pocket lol) when you leave. People call it the "Deer's (caribou} apron" cause it is around the gut area where an apron would go. Good trail food any time you stop and want a quick bite just like it is. We eat a lot of the saved fat just raw too; same with good white marrow.

Read in a lot of books about people trimming fat off wild meat - they throwing away the best part. I don't think they know what they are missing.

Went out and checked a route none of us had tried before. Lefts rights idling through shallow parts and every turn we took brought us right to this young bull.

Greg first moose. His trusty polar bear hunting 30-06 smashed the neck bone. I was calling and had this bull coming in slowly then I spotted a bigger one coming in. They held up so we walked and called through scattered timber and closed the gap to about 50 yards. The big boy was there but he was acting ten feet tall and bulletproof so we let him go and took the younger bull. The big boy started goring the dead bull and tossed it 3-4 feet with a flick of its neck. Amazing power in these animals. Made me feel small as we knelt behind a little 4” spruce tree.

Rut is picking up. This bull had a bit of scent on him but just starting. Bull moose season 2020 was great.

That would be something to watch, one bull tossing around a dead one like that.
