We just finished canning. Not a lid in the whole town to be found.
I think we have 2 lids left.

Found some more half pints and quarter pints today. They’re cheaper than boxes of rings and lids, which I can’t find anywhere around here.

I will stock up this winter when the supply may be up. If we are looking at early 2021 like this year there won't be any extra supply next year and plants will be harder to find.

If this is the wrong place for it, say so, but I know what I have to do to can something like tomato sauce using jars, lids and rings.

What I'm wondering is how do commercial outfits can stuff like a pint of salsa, in a glass jar with just a one piece screw on lid? Or the PETE bottles like tomato juice?

I’m guessing they use a lot of preservatives and have an automated system to control heat and cooling times. Stuff in a jar st a store doesn’t have the same shelf life. That’s just a guess though. Lot of work when we’re doing tomato sauce, ketchup, etc.

That one screw on lid is sealed and yes there are lots of preservatives and color additives etc. in the store bought items which is one reason I make my own. I don't put any salt in any of my tomato products. I just add more pepper, peppers etc. to get flavor. Garlic is a nice additive that adds flavor with little to no sodium either.

Those commercial lids seal just like ours do, its not relying on preservatives. You can see and hear it when you open one. Their processing/canning process is a bit different, but its the same principle.

Meanwhile, I bought 2 cases of canned tomatoes, two cases of canned green beans and two cases of canned corn for $26. That's a total of 72, perfectly sealed, canned goods. confused

I reused some lids for the first time a few weeks ago. 100% of them sealed the second time. They were fairly new lids and had only been used once.

I helped mom can27 quarts of chicken this past weekend. I believe from over the years mom has a good stash of lids. She did state when this mess calms down she will restock.
