What do you do with your yotes, are you able to sell them?

victor#0 yep sell them at Fur Rondy Last year avg was $75. If they don't sell there I get them tanned and use CL.

Well sure enough I knew something was off on that yote, The matted down fur just didn't look healthy or right. Went to cut the snare off and he already had one that he chewed out of. Not mine but that sure was nasty!

That coyote looks to have a real bushy tail on him,looks like a fox tail.

Ive only every caught a handle full of coyotes but all of them were the worst smelling animals Ive ever dealt with.

Thurman I have got plenty of them the ones that stink the most are the ones with mange and lice, The Matsu Valley k9's are going through distemper/mange/ and lice right now. A buddy got one last week, hung it in the garage to thaw out and in the morning his wife was yelling at him to get it out Said it was the worst one he had seen/ smelt,

Always love rolling up on a set looking for the springs sticking out and they aren't there



Had a fox and yote work the back side of a bait station, just a matter of time before they screw up and get caught Cut one set of kitty track, have no idea where it came from but his direction of travel is towards gear

This weather is kicking my butt pretty good. Got 18 inches last Sunday then the cold front moved in and it stayed in the -30s all week. It finally broke last night and warmed up but it also brought another 16 inches of powder!
Did manage to connect with a yote at a bait station and got pretty much everything dug out, Hopefully next run will be better,

I like watching for springs sticking out of marten boxes too. No shortage of snow here as well. It’s been taking some serious effort just to keep the trail open.

Always looking for those springs and tight wires on the snares The snow last week was that fine powder stuff that gets sucked in the air intake,,,,,,,I despise that stuff!

Was getting geared up to head out to the line when I got a phone call from Fish and Game asking if I could pick up a moose in town. Called my buddy Cory and had it back at the house a hour later. Felt bad for the moose nothing but skin and bone, Be the last one I take this year with the season coming to an end. I like topping off the bait stations end of season to help feed the seed for next year 🙂



Finally got out and sure enough connected with a nice looking yote at a pinch point.



Cut a set of marten track which makes me happy that there is seed out there for next year!

Do you take any meat off a cow like that before you add to your bait pile, or are they just for bait purposes? Looks like she would've had something on those hind quarters? Alaska isn't being very forgiving to the wildlife this year with its deep snow and relentless extreme cold weather...

Actually that is a mature bull, When I get them from F/G I don't take any meat off of them for consumption because they don't know how or why it died. They determine them as un edible for that reason and there is no salvage requirement.
Same rule applies with the critters I raise, if I don't know what killed it I dont eat it.
Now the ones I get from the troopers off the road kill list I salvage all I can.
The weather was worse last year ( snow depth ) as far as kill off of moose, if we get significantly more snow this year it will be just as bad, I have not seen a single calf out on my line this year.

Been playing cat and mouse with this big guy all season and his 9 lives finally ran out. 🙂 Last time he visited a set he dodged the snares and just circled the cubby. Changed up bait and lure and dropped a blind set in for him. Sure enough tried doing the same thing as last time 🙂





Funny how a week ago it was -32 and today it was +43 a 70 degree change in temps! Switched everything back to haysets, just hoping we don't get any rain!

I had the dangest thing happen today!

I bought a used F150 in Anchorage back in 2020 and today the alternator went out.

So I am at my shop tearing things apart to replace it and I open up the air intake......

Imagine my surprise when I found these in there! At first I thought it was a bird and after pulling them out there were 3 grouse wings cut at the joint shoved up in there!

Obviously a trapper owned this vehicle before me, so the question is who?

Made a quick run today to drop some bait, a farmer gave me 4 goats that died over the last cold spell. Started shutting down segments of the line and slipping snares, Picked up one of the smallest dang fox that I think I have ever caught, I think it would fit on a dang coon stretcher!



On the way out I decided to make a run along the railroad tracks. There is a huge open space that parallels it and it is pretty easy to see track of critters that are headed towards my line. I came a round a bend and there was a moose trail with blood, then a bed with blood, and then there goes a moose with chunks of meat dangling off his rear leg. Pretty gross. Called the troopers and they said let nature run its course. I can only assume it got smacked by a train or a car. I will keep an eye on the area its in and see how it plays out.

Weasel hiding the wings in an off season would be my guess
