I don’t have a Creedmore, a magpull, a muzzle break, a painted stock, a coated barrel, a mill dot scope, or a bypod. I don’t shoot 1000 yards either. Why have I not been skunked a single year in 50 years of hunting. What have I turned in to? Oh my. Surely I am doomed. What must I do. Deer season is a month away.

The older I get I despise deer season. I tried to do everything right with my boys. Starting at 8 until they were 12 I made them shoot does only. At 13-15 I let them shoot a cull buck. After 16 game on!!! I was trying to instill in them that it’s not about the antlers, but the hunt and the great time in the outdoors. I was successful, but it was a uphill battle when they saw kids younger than them shooting big bucks. I hope each one of them remembers and cherishes those first hunts and kills as much as I do. Taking the last one on his first hunt was something I’ll never forget!

Charles...when i was younger and my dad was logging, he wore a bright colored light blue sweatshirt that stunk like sweat and chainsaw mix fuel. He had a 40# pull daemon howett recurve with cedar arrows and fixed bear broadheads he sharpened by hand. His quiver was literally two wooden clothespins taped to face of his bow with electrical tape and he only took two arrows. Sometimes he needed a second shot. No tree stands we would sometimes drive a few 16 penny nails together in side of bark where he needed a step to get up to next branch. Now this was back when our deer populations weren't real high around here either. That guy killed more deer with his bow than anyone I knew. Sit still, be a good shot. No gimmicks, no calls, no fancy pin sights, no shots longer than he was comfortable hitting, he'd walk into stand in the dark, walk out well after dark. No camp, no scent cover up, no crap like that. He used to call compound bows "block and tackle" bows and would never buy one. Had a bear grizzly 45# recurve and used that for many years. Liked his cedar arrows and fixed bear heads too...nothing screwed in on his stuff at all. When a sport starts to require lots of stuff and a special outfit, its no longer fun and it gets expensive. Dad and I didn't always see eye to eye on things but his approach to and advice about outdoors and woodsmanship were sound and I appreciate him for the lessons. I'm not a deer guy either but really enjoyed sitting in stands with my son and smiled when he pulled out a call from his pocket. I said hey just put that away and let's just sit and watch...this is a good spot with active trails, we shouldn't need that. And, dad was right.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Tell a kid they can't do something OR won't let them do something then they will spend all their life doing the opposite. !!! LOL

Taking the last one on his first hunt was something I’ll never forget! I might get roasted for this but oh well.... I don't take kids deer hunting until they're 14. I won't take my kids until at least 12 but more likely older. Starting at 8 its all about small game, squirrels and rabbits. at 10 maybe sit in a goose blind and at 12 put them on pheasants. I want them to really appreciate what hunting is before they get to deer hunting. I know many here don't think much of deer hunting compared to all the other big game in North America but locally its the best we have and I don't want them to peak too soon.
