What calibers can the Remington 7600 in 30-06 be changed over to ? Looking for something smaller with less kick.

I would imagine any of the 06 based cartridges or ones that have the same base diameter as long as the case taper and shoulder feed through the magazine. Not sure if short action length cartridges would work without a magazine block though.
I seem to recall reading somewhere extra care is needed on that action when unscrewing or screwing in the barrel as the receiver is somewhat thin and easily twisted if not fully supported.

Probably simpler & cheaper to sell it and buy a different rifle

Would be a waste of $$ I think.
You can get reduced loads for the kick factor.

The bolt face on the 30-06 is either .470 or .480

anything based off the 30-06 case or 308 case yes I suppose technically anything based of 6x55 swede , 7x57 mauser or 8x57 mauser since they all share .473 rimless bases because 30-06 came from 30-03 and 30-03 and 30-06 were made to exceed 7x57 after the Spanish american war where the maximum ordinate of the 7x57 was realized to be greater than 30-40 krag

you might have magazine issues if you tried 30tc or 6.5creed because base is the same but the body of the case is wider

all the 7x57 8x57 , 6.5x55 can be made from reforming 7.62x63 aka 30-06springfield

I agree with above advice. After buying the barrel and paying a competent Smith you'd be losing money.

Those guns are so light and have stock dimensions that don't help for recoil. I sight them in for guys here mostly in 280 and 270 but recoil is different for everyone.

Good luck.

The bbl doesn’t screw into or out of the receiver on those rifles.
Remove the slide/forearm, there is a rod about 9/16 inches in diameter and has a hole through it about two inches in front of the receiver. That rod unscrews from the front of the receiver and the bbl slides straight out the front. Only thing to say about swapping caliber as I haven’t done it isIf you can find a bbl for a standard.473 case head cartridge and magazine and a set of headspace gauges it should be doable.

Then I stand corrected and I must be remembering something said about some other action.

agreed, or start handloading reduced loads

I'd go with a 257 Roberts or 260 Rem or 7x57 probably, since they are super efficient at/near getting velocities of larger cartridges with less powder. The 260 is short though.
Rent the go/no go gages from either 4D or Reamerrentals.

BUT FIRST I'd ask the gunsmiths and Rem owners on greybeards as well as folks on 1 of the Remington forums.

just down load the 30-06 to 308 velocities , I do it for my Rem 742 , they kill deer just fine 44gr H4895 with a 165gr BTSP speer bullet is a nice load

you could always buy the Managed recoil loads for 30-06 they load them with 125gr bullets

there are some clamp on muzzle brakes you take a caliper reading on the barrel and they cut you a brake that I fits. it cuts the recoil if you shoot from inside a box blind you need to make sure the muzzle is well out the window

I've shot the low recoil stuff from Hornady in both my 7600 and a Winchester, both in .30-06. There was a noticeable reduction in recoil. Shot 4 deer with that ammo, accurate stuff but not much for blood trails. All 4 deer were heart shots and the two that were bucks didn't leave more than a spot or two of blood and still made it about 75 yards combined. The does bled better.

I just put a Boyd's hardwood laminate thumbhole stock on my 7600, looking forward to getting it on the range.

nice looking gun ,

rifles just don't seem to make the same kind of blood trails shotguns do it helps to bust a shoulder if you need to anchor them it ruins some meat but better to loose a couple pounds than all of it.

As mentioned above, swapping barrels on those is a breeze. In fact, I’ve got a 270 Winchester barrel that I’m waiting to find the right donor action for. I’m going to have the barrel cut to 16” to have it in a carbine length. Something shot those guns in carbine length that just makes them shine.

I keep desperately hoping that one day someone will call me "Sir" without adding "please calm down" or "you're causing a scene."
