Wondering if you guys might offer me your thoughts on how big a window to put in the front of my cabin. I'm overlooking a pasture and want something rather large to view it through. I'm thinking 3' x 5'. Thoughts if you would. [Linked Image]

How about a patio door?

Personally I wouldn't do a patio door. Every place I've lived at with a patio door has had frost growing on the inside of it in cold weather. Too much air leakage. Now if you aren't going to use the cabin in cold weather than thats another story.

As far as windows, I would say it depends upon whats on the inside, how the rooms behind that wall are divided.

If its one big room behind it I wouldn't do just on big window rather I'd be thinking about several medium sized windows.

And again, if your going to use the place in winter than the amount and type of windows should be a consideration.

go shopping let what is available non custom 37.5x56.75 makes for some nice big windows and nothing says you can't put them 2-3-4 wide get lots of ventilation leave the screen out of one for shooting so you slide it open and harvest some meat.

when I built my porch and framed it in I sat down and looked at what windows I could get for what price I did 4 big windows in the south and west walls

pick the windows then cut the hole(s)

It's a 24' by 30' cabin that I'm not going to chop up much, if at all and I intend to live in it year round. I priced a 3' by 5' window and it came to around $450.00. Low-E, tempered glass.

Put in two smaller windows that open. Never know when your going to want to shoot something out the window.

If your going to live in it year round then look at at least at a min. double panes but better yet a triple pane.

I know the cost is higher but the the difference is huge. Stand next to a double pane on a cold day and you can feel the chill, not so with a triple pane.

Even if your heating with wood the less wood that is required to heat the place the better.

Type of windows, Casements, much better at sealing than double hung and better viewing out, no bar across the middle.

Thanks for the input thus far. I priced a double pane window, I'll get a price on triple pane. I like the idea of having a window I can open just in case Mr. Big decides to show himself while I'm sipping coffee. I'm going to go check the lumber yard and see what they have.

I would get a 3 set of double hungs. That way you still have all the light of a nice picture window but can also open the windows in the summer. Also be mindful of settling and the pressure it can put on the frames. Many folks leave a small gab to allow for the settling. Beautiful cabin you got there.

I would NOT opt for one big window. Like Dirty D says, go for more than one but smaller. Especially in a log wall ! Be sure to give adequate headspace above and use splines in the cut logs so they can settle straight down and stay aligned with each other.

This. Did you pin your logs ? I marked all the pins on mine so I could add windows in the future and not hit them with the saw when cutting out.

Thanks for all of the great advice. I did pin the logs at the corners and periodically throughout the wall with oak dowels. I knew I'd be cutting openings and didn't want to risk striking re-bar pins. I do intend to spline the window and door openings. I'm thinking of esthetics as much as anything else goes as far as the windows are concerned. I want to keep it as rustic as possible and I'm not sure of what's out there as far as commercially available windows go that would meet my needs that way.

As you can see from the pic (maybe), I still haven't cut an opening in the structure, yet. Still trying to get my nerve up for that. I'll post some better pics later. Thanks for the help.

having owned and live(d) in 2 houses 1873 and 1909 that have windows to knee height in the 21st century I see no need for a window below table height

it really limits furnature placment I gave up and the back of the couch looks at the bottom 1/3 of a window as does the buffet in the dining room

on the porch I made my big windows only come down to counter height that seems to be enough light

I would not go below table height , it is nice to have a table or desk in-front of a window but any window below the table seems wasted window and a place for stuff to drop down

I cut my door out last time I was there. Got tired of climbing over the walls.
