I went out and did a little bit of Grouse hunting this afternoon. Managed to find 3 and shoot 3! I think they’re on the decline this year though. I haven’t seen many this year. I also found a creek I never knew about. There’s a real good deer trail right behind me in this pic. I had a trailcam in the backpack, so I hung it and will be back next week with a stand. I’m thinking it’ll be a good rutting spot. Big bucks going down! Got that good feeling!

Those are fun, been about 30 years, when we went duck and goose hunting in Wisconsin. We would kill red and gray phase birds.

When I was a kid there were lots of Grouse or as we call them, Partridge. Now, around here they are spotty. Still decent amounts in some parts of Northern Maine. Mac

A long time ago. My kids are 14 and 16 now so they do all the ruffie killing. I remember a few years back, I’d take a shotgun to work at school to kill them enroute. My boys both forgot their lunch one day and we had a daily limit of ten dead before we hit our driveway 7 miles away.

Nice bag JP I kill one now and then during elk season, maybe three years ago. Got to aim real careful with a Centerfire and just shoot their heads off or there’s nothing left to grill. We have mostly blues here, bigger bird but not nearly as tasty.

Thanks! Some years it’s very common to shoot 6-12 in a day. We have Spruce, Ruffed, and Sharptails. The Sharpies population is going up here.

Polluted with grouse here-mostly spruce but lots of ruffed too.Used to be hundreds of sharptails too,big flocks 50-60 birds. They have been on the decline for 15 years or so.Still some around in smaller flocks of 10 to 20 if you know where to hunt. I shoot some grouse when trapping, but leave a lot more than I shoot. After a few feeds of grouse in the fall,I generally leave them alone.

I prefer the rufflies because they’re the easiest. Ruff’s taste the best! Spruce are the easiest lol.

Season starts here in Maine this Saturday for ruffed grouse. We have a few spruce around but there is no season for them. A daily bag limit from last year - some mighty fine eating!
