here you can have 243 and 30-06 at farm and fleet or most box stores.maybe some 350 legend mostly because they made a lot of it and there is so little reason for it in WI.

the local gun shop has a few things , and some obscure stuff but talking to him last week he is not sure he will have anything left come deer season and he is not able to get much of any thing in.

other than a few small shops that have a decent amount of long guns any handgun under 550 is sold in the big box stores about any gun under 550 all the pump shotguns anything that would be useful for self defense is gone.

I saw the first 30-30 ammo in months 2 weeks ago , and then it was gone also

keep in mind I am just under 2 hours to Kenosha.

Is there another run on guns? Is this one driven by fears of a Biden election?

7-08. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. The 7-08 was originally made for long distance shooting at silhouettes. The 6.5 can do the same, but with extremely long and more expensive bullets. The .284 bullets are nothing to scoff at however. You can also load down rounds and have considerably less recoil for practice.

P.S. I’ve seen a few elk shot with the Creed and I’m not impressed....compared to the 08.

I went through a lot of whitetail rifles until I ultimately settled on the 7mm-08. I then bought one for my wife who enjoys the low recoil, accuracy and puts them on the ground fast effect of the 7mm-08.

the election probably isn't helping however so much more than the election.

Jim , you may have been hiding under a rock but when the reality of ZERO police doing anything but getting bricks and Molotov cocktails and water bottles getting thrown at them while trying to keep the rioters , looters and Arsonists from burning down the police station and attached jail full of inmates.

if you got shot or beaten there were no ambulances to take you to the ER

the media would like to have you believe that Kyle Rittenhouse was the only person who shot , there were a bunch of other shots fired , rioters waling around stuffing guns in peoples faces across the parking lot 50 yards or less from where Kyle fired his first 4 rounds into the man trying to grab his rifle from him while he lay on the ground after tripping while being chases there was a known felon firing of shots into the air.

people in Kenosha saw this and people outside Kenosha saw this

Kenosha is one of those cities where it seems like everyone in WI has a relative in Kenosha or close to Kenosha I have a few.

guns had been flying off the shelves since March , people concerned about what covid and desperate people who were out of work might do , seeing Minneapolis which is just 4 hours awayor less from much of Wisconsin , Chicago which isn't very far away at all.

Jim , the run on guns was bad enough that you could not buy a Pump shotgun at any major retailer in southern Wi in June or July. some of the small and out of the way places had some even thier stock was light.

When Madison was burning and nightly riots a friend was at the Fleet Farm in Deforest WI about 15 minutes North east of Madison , I had been to the Delevan store the same day delevan is about 45 minutes from Madison the store closer to Madison had no handguns at all , the one in Delevan had only a few handguns and they were either over $600 mostly large revolvers or 22lr.

this year makes every other run on guns and ammo in previous election years look like nothing.

sorry 30-06 , back to hunting guns for your daughter , Jim has been out of touch with the lower 48 apparently this year.

I have a 260 Remington (same preformance as 6.5 creedmore) I built before the creedmore came out.

I have a 243 and 7mm08.

They all work very well but I prefer the 7mm08. If the 243 ever gets shot out it will get 7mm08 barrel to replace it.

If it helps I was very pleased with the job my 6.5 Creedmoor did on a cow elk using a hornady 143 grain ELDX. She made it about 30 yards and piled up. Not taking anything away from the 7mm/08 I know it is a good round as well. Don't own one but have a friend that has killed a ton of deer with his.

Thanks for the inputs. GCP, your description makes me glad we're already armed and out on our little slice of Alaskan heaven! Best wishes to all TMan world for health and safety over these next few months.

My takeaway from the 6.5C vs. 7/08 discussion is that both will do the job, with perhaps the 7/08 slightly favored. Now it's down to picking a rifle. Given the current arms and ammunition market, I'll be limited by availability. Still have the .243 if I can't find something suitable this fall/winter. Davisfur, thanks for the cow elk picture. I'm guessing cow elk is similar or slightly bigger than caribou bull in size.

Couldn't say for certain on the comparison to a caribou 06 because I've never seen one in person. But I can say that she was quite a bit taller and heavier than the mule deer buck that was feeding on the same hillside with her. Up until that day I had never seen much less hunted a wild elk and had only seen a muley once before. When I walked up on that cow she looked like I had downed a horse! Lol. I'm very proud to have had my rangefinder because with thier size I would have guessed them at being about 200 yards out when in reality they were 368. Lots of fine eating!
