Do trapping lures go bad. I have had them stored in my garage out of direct sunlight for a year or two. Some of them in ammo boxes. But it seems like anything that has had skunk in it does not smell like skunk anymore and has somewhat dried up. Even the lids are starting to rust. Do I need to get rid of these and just get fresh or will they still work

The skunk odor will dissipate over time in lures. It's too volatile to be a long-lasting odor. The lure will still work.

You might not be able to smell it but critters can. I believe it is even more enticing than when they are over powered with it. JMO.

If it dries up I believe you could add a little glycerine or mineral oil to it without any harm.

Make sure you wrap tape, I use electrical, around the cap when storing to keep from drying out

I prefer to make up new every year. I store my skunk lures in the metal ammo boxes.

If I buy a skunky lure, which is usually for LDC purposes, I only buy 1 oz. bottles because once you open it the skunk potency will start to dissipate as already mentioned. If you buy a 4 oz. bottle and don't use it all you generally won't be able to detect skunk in it the next season. That doesn't mean the animal can't still detect it. It just depends on how strong of a skunk smell you prefer or the application you're using it for.

As Paul stated a sharp or obvious skunk odor in a product will dissipate over time even in an unopened jar or bottle.

Skunk essence has a unique chemistry vapor which escapes even the most well sealed container over time. Each time the jar is opened some volume of the material is released into the air.
The more frequent the use the faster the dissipation. Just the nature of the material.

In the event that this happens and the lure appears to have gone flat so to speak just keep a bottle of essence handy and spike the lure to your liking and stir or shake well then you are back in business.

If not just use as is, since there will be trace essence within the product even after your human sense cannot detect it as it was before.

I have a 3 year old bottle of wind walker that still has plenty of skunky smell. It is a 1 ounce bottle and I don't use it very often.

I use the more expensive poly caps on our bottles. Darn caps are up to .17 each now!
But, they are much better in securing the smells in the bottle than metal with cardboard liners.

If you want the skunk odor back in it you could always trap a skunk, extract the quill and put a drop in it. And I mean a DROP lol a little goes a long way. Extracting the quill from a skunk is easy to do
