Shot two of my rifles at the 100 yd range today. Both had been out of theIr stocks since last season. Both 700s. First rifle shot a perfect three shot group 3” high at 100 yards. It got a Trigertech custom trigger since last shooting. Turned it down an inch. It is an LVSF in 7-08. It is my old age rifle.

Second rifle is 270 ADL in a custom stock. First two shots from a cold barrel were perfect. Decided to shoot a third and it was 1.5” right. Next shot was dead on with the third. Barrel was very warm. Quit and came home. Figured the cold barrel shots were the more important.

Now I have to go back with grandsons 243 Featherweight and his dads 280 A Bolt. If I don’t check their rifles, they will never get checked.

Wonder how many hunters go out each year without sighting in their rifles.

I favor a cold shot unless it is from a cleaned barrel.

Let’s hope so. I don’t hunt where shots are over 200 yards, not because of the range, but because I am too old to climb those field tower stands. I just hunt log roads from ground boxes. Like to drop them where they stand and use four wheeler to drag them back to skinning shed and walk in cooler. Need 4-6 doe deer per year for family. Get them early and I don’t have to hunt in the coldest weather.

Ain’t it fun? Nothing like deer camp and old friends. My room is in a 40 year old mobile home. Bunk bed, private room, new mattress. Got an old recliner for mid day reading and napping. My tracking dog died however.

Yep I hate the heat for shooting. Over the years I started waiting till it gets colder outside so the barrel doesn't get heated so easy and cools down faster. I if shoot my rifle in temperatures above 60° weather my 3rd shot is off up to 2 inches.

I was out this morning checking one I had moved the scope forward one more slot on the rail.

I checked a different one Saturday.

I check every gun we hunt every year I like to get the rifles verified at 100 yards and then go check them at 200 also.
you are right about a lot of people never check them

some fire one round

my cousin had checked his gun with 1-2 rounds each year before season and it had been on , then the year he didn't something got bumped and it was 6 inches right at 30 yards that is a lot to be off

sighting in is about more than just verifying the optic is on , a little practice at a few different distances and especially from something other than a bench is ideal.

I took a few from sitting and kneeling.

this year is probably going to be worse than normal with the lack of ammo well unless you have a 30-06 plenty of ammo for that still but give it a week or two.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I always crack off a couple rounds from the bench before season. If I miss I dont ever want to question my equipment.
