Hutchy go shoot a pile of mergansers and hand them out when asked for wild game.....they won't be asking again.. We just got a government mandated cormorant hunt. Limit of like a dozen birds or something. You have given me a dastardly idea....

It's fairly common down here also. I also have people who are very interested in trying beaver meat LOL.
In a lot of circles here, people tend to cook wild game at special occasions or get togethers so they think of it as a novelty.
Just happy to be here.

For exam Ha, we were just discussing this yesterday. I give deer away every year. A co-worker who is outdoor clueless asked me for a deer a few years ago. I told him absolutely I'd get him one because many times I don't fill tags if I don't need the meat. Now, where I come from, if someone is giving you a deer you can expect a "deer" to be dropped off at your house. Gutted and tagged, that's it. At the very most, skinned and quartered. Well my buddy is all excited about me getting him a deer and says, "matter of fact, just go ahead and grind the entire thing into burger and I'll take it like that...…" Thought he was joking, but he wasn't. Yeah..... I'll get right on that! Thats funny. See, up here, we don't have many multiple tags. I am happy to have drawn a doe tag (which is good for doe or buck). Bucks are always legal, but only one per person generally unless you want to trvel all voer to other areas where they might offer another tag. If there were an abundance of deer and I got five a year, no problem. And good luck getting a moose tag. One only for the average person a year for bear also. For example: in the next week of our early rifle doe season, between my wife and kids, we can legally shoot 16 doe. That's not counting archery or buck season.
Trash your goals and plans for life. Just wing it and you'll never be let down!

Hutchy-make up a bunch of sausage out of beaver meat-when you grind it throw in a few oil stones. Give them a package of that when they ask.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

All the time. Just because I hunt, fish and garden they think we are overloaded with "free" food. Fish is the worst. People asume I have freezers full fo fish laying around. "Come over and lets have a fish fry!" Translation: "why don't you bring all your fish, and probably the oil too, and we can eat all your fish! Oh and, maybe bring your deep fryer too!" I'd ask you to provide the beer as well!

I might breast some cormorants, then grind with oil stones to make a packet of meat for that special someone. Could you imagine the look on their faces after a minute and a half of that in a frying pan??

I don't understand.
Do people ever ask you for wild meat?
People know I kill stuff and are always asking if they could have just a couple of steaks, or "when are you going to bring some of that (deer, bear, moose, fish) etc over. Or, "perhaps you could drop off a pack of smelt one day?"
If I want to give someone meat, I will do so. I don't see you go to the grocery store and make a point to stop by and ask you for a T-bone, or Sirloin, do I? If you are not someone who I would normally get together with and have burgers on a Sunday afternoon, stop asking me for my food! Its food, not a novelty!
I get my meat from the bush, not the store. Only difference. If you want meat not from a store, buy a tag and get it yourself.
You don't think about what you eat much when you buy it from the store. When you hunt it, its different. I know every part. From practicing with the bow, to setting up the hunt, bait sites, trail cams, hanging stands, to shooting, dressing, dragging it out, hanging it, and finally butchering, grinding and wrapping it and putting it in the freezer.
Come to think of it, maybe I will start asking people for T-bones! Wouldn't that make sense? After all, all they did is walk into a store and spend $16.99 plus HST on it, already cleaned and frozen, then drop it on a grill.
Makes perfect sense! That meat didn't cost them hours of unproductive sitting if the cold, checking trail cams, buying all the gear and all the other work that went into it, the blood sweat and tears. That should mean that they would be happy to give me some nice, cheap store bought meat. They can also just go buy other meat anytime they want!
Their excuse for asking is always because they never get a chance to eat wild meat. My reason for asking for a T-bone is exactly the same! I never get to eat store bought steak, and it is a bit of a novelty for me also!
Tomorrow I am starting phase 1 of operation "Ask for T-bones". I figure I should be able to fill my freezer whenever I want, just by asking the neighbors when I see them carrying grocery bags up to their house!
And no one will give me grief for it! After all, they only spent $16.99 plus HST on their meat! What a bargain!
Not very neighborly are you? I love to give the wild meat I kill away. Guess it is the way I was raised !!! Prayers sent.........

I sent my sister and her family four gallon freezer bags full of elk jerky for Christmas. They went through it quick with request for more. I explained that it was a lot of work with all the slicing and smoking and I didn’t do it every year. She sent me a power slicer!!!

To your point though Hutch, kidding aside; it has always been more appropriate to do some sort of trade when asking for fish and game..

Please take the above post a bit more tongue in cheek. Also, keep in mind at one deer per person, it doesn't last long and I will be back with those same neighbors taking pictures of my steaks to put on the wall. Not sure what the laws are like in Ky, but here between the wolves, winter kill, other hunters and the darn neighbors, you chances of even getting your one deer per person is not great when you look at how many buy tags vs how many tag out. They manage our populations based on doe tags. It changes, but I haven't drawn a doe tag in years.

What in gods name... What does the non resident hunt look like? I would legit drive to Virginia with a trailer... Our friends drive all the way from Florida for the deer #'s. We are well known as a 'freezer filler' state. Not known for trophies but numbers. The cost must be reasonable as well considering the # of non res. we get every year.

To your point though Hutch, kidding aside; it has always been more appropriate to do some sort of trade when asking for fish and game.. I dont mind giving people stuff, to be honest, but it always seems to be from those people who are used to getting stuff for free. I try and keep altruism alive, but a lot of times, please see this post: Same thing here: Q) Where's my steak? A) In the woods on your deer.
Q) Where's my fish? A) I released them so you can catch them.
Q) I really like those vegetables. Next year can you plant some extra for me? A) Sure, buy some seed and fertilizer. In April come over and rototill an extension on my garden.
Most people don't ask anymore. I enjoy sharing the fruits of my labor with others but it has to be my idea and on my terms.
