So my buddy claims he was sitting in his deer stand yesterday and a pack of five Fox came through. Has anybody ever heard or seen of this. I can understand in the spring when the mom is with her pups but I would have thought they are split up by now

I shudder at the term pack of fox but yes....family groups disperse at different times everywhere......still it seems very odd here. Its the way i have doubled and tripled.....also at breeding time. 5 now would be very strange here where I am.

So what is a group of fox called ? If it's in the dog family.

it may be proper but I would prefer to use family group or litter.

Correct name for a group of fox is a Skulk
It was most likely a mother fox with YOY that have not dispersed yet.
But I would still call it a pack. They are k-9s

There are many names for a group of fox : skulk, leash, earth, charm and yes, even pack. Take your pick.

A few years ago I was hunting the muzzle loader season (late November) and seen 4 come out together into the field I was set up on, I always figured it was a group of pups that were still sticking together for whatever reason

Anyways they spread out in the field and went to mousing and stayed around till I got up to leave at end of shooting time when they all bolted in different directions

I seen foxes several times later but never more then 1 or 2 together after that

Four red fox and a house cat all going the same direction. The cat tracks are fresher. The four fox tracks look about the same age. All are less than twenty-four hours old, likely less than twelve hours old. Were they together?

That is a known behaviour in red foxes.A Male and female pair may have other adult females as helpers raising young and hunting. The female helpers are related to each other. The group can stay together for over a year.
Male red foxes disperse in fall much farther than females and the females often return to become helpers.

Not a very smart cat. I was on my way home from work at 4 AM years ago and nearly hit a cat flat out trying to get back up a driveway with a fox hot on its tail.

Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s I hunted a military installation that was loaded with red fox. It was common to see up to 5-7 at a time. I’ll also throw in they brought in a biologist to figure out why their small game and quail populations had been decimated, lol. Between the fox and feral cats you’d hardly even see a song bird. There was also a population of greys on certain parts of the installation...learned then that Grey fox climb trees. Apparently persimmons were a favorite.

New Years day 1980 I picked up 5 reds all in snares and all within 10 feet of each other. I am positive that they were all related. 2 adults and 3 YOY. But what convinced me they were a family group was that they ALL were Samson ! What a disappointment !

I averaged $150 on reds that year so that day wasn't quite the bonanza I first thought.

Few years back I had a large family/skulk of kit foxes join me for coffee and breakfast at camp while deer hunting. One of the coolest experiences I've had. At one point 3 were within 10' as the others hung around the dens or a little further back
