Yes, I like to set near paths or terrain features such as dikes(terraces) . once you find a spot that works it will produce year after year. Good luck

Terraces, pond in middle of field, weedy and grassy draws, little drainage ditches, sometimes all kinds of features out in middle of field and any coyote in area worth its salt knows they are there. Less pressure fom hunters too.
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I'll scan across the field and pick the highest spot or any ant mound is bound to be hot

Yep. In Montana there’s a lot of dry land farms, and small washes through the middle of those fields are great for coyote

Are there tracks in the middle of the field, or are you just taking about throwing a set out for looks and see if it connects? Always tracks in winter. Just no structure to make a set . I thinking about a pipe set in a clump of hay

In the fall before the snow falls take a post hole digger and dig a big hole and pile up the dirt so It's noticeable. Or just haul a load of dirt out there. Or take a single square bale and place it out In the field. Then make a set near by.

Open fields are about all I trap. No deer hunters out there but plenty of yotes. Posts are yote killin locations. 4th and 5th yote here.
I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.
More trappin' and less yappin'.

a plastic bag, no color preferance on a two or three foot stick in middle open field works great . I make three differant type sets around the flag stick. After two three catch circles , make just urine or flat sets as season progresses...
