A friend lives in Florida where it's HOT and the humidity is horrible. The air conditioner is 4 years old, cools the house down to 75 but the humidity stays at about 68* which is very miserable. It's a Trane TEM6AOC36H31SAA.......... 1700 sq ft home. It has a programmable thermostat that is set on 50% humidity but it stays about 68%. Sometimes it shuts off for an hour or so, then starts back up. Any ideas where to start? It's been looked at a couple times but not fixed. Thank you for any suggestions.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Don't know, but typically thermostats only deal in degrees...unless there is a dehumidifier "branch" of the system. May have to run (or install) a separate dehumidifier. Just my ignorant two pennies, good luck.

Hard to say without looking at it. If it’s working properly it should pull the humidity to around 45-50% even down there. Could be a little low on refrigerant, condenser coils could be fouled, etc. If it’s equipped with high and low pressure switches either condition will trip it on and off. Best answer is have someone check it out and make sure at least the coils are cleaned annually. On a side note - TRANE’s ain’t what they used to be either. When it trips off have him go outside and check the suction line (larger copper line) for ice - if it’s icing up he probably has an airflow restriction or low on refrigerant.

Has it always been that way. If so that would indicate that is oversized for the house. If a system is oversized it runs for a short period Of time and cools the house down quickly. When that happens not enough moisture is removed from the air. You may also be able to check the fan speed on the furnace or air handling unit. That should always be on high for air conditioning. Some of the newer units are equipped with variable speed motors. But that is typically in a zoned system.

All of this is good advice as well

It’s a 2 1/2 ton unit - probably reasonable size for a 1700sf house, assuming it’s one level.
