My son is about the same age, a father of four, but of different political convictions than yours.

Son Paul believes the Christian community is failing its principles by backing Trump.
Paul has debated the issue intensively in his church. His old man's opinions didn't have anything to do with his views on Trump. Look more toward the children that were taken from their parents on our border, and are held apart still, to find one of the causes for his reasoning.
I am indeed proud of him.
Of course he won't vote for Biden either, because of his VP pick's stand on abortion. He's lodging a third-party vote this time.

That's awesome Mark. My dad and I had a running joke where he'd tell me to stop looking down on him, I'd tell him to hurry up and grow then my dad came up to my shoulders

Jim Well that makes sense from the democrat platform on abortion. The border (we're down here) is a mess and dangerous and it has nothing to do with people being taken from their parents IMO. That's media drivel. The San Antonio detention facility is NICE! Nicer than where they came from. The courts are a mess because of decades of a mess. My ranches near Laredo and Del Rio both are BAD BAD BAD places and I watch my back when I'm alone. Tequilla bottles everywhere where there used to be water bottles tossed. Drugs, drugs, drugs and human trafficking. Brooks county is terrible. One President can't fix all this mess. Too much $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ flowing back and forth. But one president has been down here ALL THE TIME. We have too many people have an opinion never come and look at it.

For Paul, the abortion issue is a big one. He and I don't agree all the way there.
No matter how nice, a detention center is still a detention center. And the people who separated the kids and parents had "U.S." printed on their uniforms.
But I don't know all of his reasoning. He did go on two mission trips to Mexico before he was married, and maybe that experience affected him.

I don't really know how you solve one side being incredibly poor and across the border incredibly wealthy and "safe." I totally understand sneaking across. Heck, I'd sneak across. But we've had years of stupid judges making stupid rulings against human suffering and now the money has taken over. All of it. People get killed on the border either side who dare say a thing. People are scared and shrug shoulders. Mexico is corrupt. Like living next to N. Korea. What'd do ya do? I don't know honestly. South America is becoming N. Korea. It won't get better soon. The US printed shirts are the good guys trust me. Mothers giving girls 10 and up birth control on the journey because all will be raped. If the mothers come at all.
I'll hopefully be headed to minister in Panama when Covid breaks and ministry efforts open back up. They're poorer yet.
No easy answers but the news media your son is watching are inaccurate and bias. I meet BPO all the time and they are just like officers in a war zone. Doing the best they can with the laws on the books. Tell your son to get on his phone to your US congress people. They pass legislation.

Good for you Mark! My mom and I have frequent debates over politics and how Christianity is intertwined. Shes pro Trump and I voted for Libertarian candidate Jo Jorgensen today. She says that our laws should adhere to Biblical principles whereas I say that we have freewill and laws should only punish us when we infringe on other peoples rights. My viewpoint is that the government cannot legislate morality. Fun stuff! I would offer that in a democratic republic, the people are the law maker voter inners. We have been a sloppy people for decades as far as legislative representatives. We're good at making money. Working hard. Don't care what other people do behind closed doors. Don't judge me I won't judge you. All sorts of one liners. How we doing as a nation with 100 years of that plan? Better now than when it was started? I guess we'll decided at the polls. Or not. I say we have a moral obligation not as far as salvation is concerned but it's 100% biblical to care for the outcasts, the orphan, widow, and aliens who depend on us as followers to make this world accommodating for them. It should start with us. Who else? Progressives? Liberal theologians? Nope. They always talk and do diddly. You're right on the government regulating morality. That brings about sticky wickets. Blessings, Mark
