Since my dad is almost done with my new flinter, I figured I should get busy and make a shooting pouch to go with it. I made a large buffalo powder horn last year, so I decided to stick with a western trapper theme. Large, early beads on braintan deer. Yes, the bead lines are supposed to be crooked, several originals I have studied have the same "feature."

Here's a pic of the largest tom I've shot while hunting "period". In this case, this is about the year 1780, somewhere in the Ohio River country.



Here's the biggest buck I've shot with a flintlock rifle. It was cold that year and I didn't have the clothing necessary to dress period and stay warm.

Thanks for posting. I’ve never shot a flintlock but love a good musket. Shot my best mule deer with dads 54 cal. I own a inline but have never shot it.

Do you know the average delay from when the trigger is pulled to ignition of powder? Just curious

The delay is very, very short. I do notice it when I switch back to shooting centerfire. When I am shooting flinters, I don't notice the delay, unless something goes wrong. Damp priming powder, a partially blocked touch hole, poor spark can all contribute to delayed ignition.

What is your definition of musket? In the period, muskets are typically flintlock (later ones are caplock) smoothbores used primarily by the military. Most are large in caliber, think 69 and up. My dad has an awesome Dutch musket replica, like the ones the States purchased during the revolution. It's 80 caliber, shoots a 0.750 inch round ball with 100 grains powder. That packs a wallop. And the bayonet looks sweet.

The long delay in some guns is usually over priming the pan or a long narrow touch hole. If you pile too much priming in the pan, it has to burn to the bottom. the idea is to get a quick hot flash into the barrel-not a slow fuse. I have shot flintlocks with a White Lightning touch hole liner that were very fast.

Very nice, nothing crooked about the bead lines in my opinion, I went after an elk my first time in muzzleloader elk season CO 1990, flintlock rifle. 5 days of rain convinced me to go with percussion cap after that. Started to use an inline around 2004, did not like beating up my heirloom quality sidehammer I had built in 1994.

A fine tuned rock lock will fire pretty dang fast....makes you a better shooter ( Follow Through)

This is the only pic I have of the big musket., Its the first on the left, with the sling. Next 3 are all 62 cal smoothbores (20 gauge), then a 54 and two 50's. All but 2 built by my dad, the other 2 built by me.

Nice looking bag! and nice looking flinters! Top two pictures are my .45 J.P Beck Rifle, third image is of my Virginia style .50 cal and the bottom picture is my .45 caliber Kibler Kit that I put together this summer.

I've heard a lot of good things about those kibler kits. How'd it go together for you?

My current rifle is a JP Beck. New rifle is Hermann Rupp/ Lehigh Valley inspired.
