My wife and I had it done several years ago. We feel it is a better option that the bypass because it can be undone if there is a problem. I am down about 100 lb, she is down about 75.
You also might consider the sleeve as another procedure. My band slipped and caused problems which required a second surgery.
All in all we are very happy with the outcome, but it takes a while to overcome 50 years of bad habits. If you don't have the right mind set nothing will work, it is only a tool to help you.
Good luck! PM me if you would like.

Serious question. Is there a medical reason dieting does not work for some people?

Charles,
Been a long time since we chatted! I recall a conversation on NCHF years back about this very topic. Jack was looking at getting one done. I also recall a comment from a guy who was a mortician who said that the internal organs of people who had had them done were just plain wrecked, in his words " a mess". He went into a bit more detail, but it was essentially the rapid weight loss taking it's toll on the body. I'd echo the question above on whether there is a reason diet can't be adjusted to compensate and reverse issues you're having. I do know this from personal experience as well as that of some close friends who've struggled with similar issues. Your relationship with food simply has to change. 50% of patients who had the surgery regained their weight within 24 months - higher in the super obese*. I personally witnessed a woman eat herself right back out of it (serious complications). It's a tool, not a solution. The solution is coming to terms with your relationship with food, the reasons you eat, and why you consume what you do. Unless you address those issues upfront, you'll not be successful in any change. In short, you need a life style change. Not just for you, but for your family. They deserve to have you around for a long time, as you do them! You may need to visit with someone to help come to terms with your relationship with food, and it's origination - no shame in that at all. Next would be a dietician possibly for some reality checks. Some other tools are MyFitnessPal App, and the one I'd suggest the most, Ruled.me Consider Keto - yes it seems like another fad, but considering it's a lifestyle change for life, it's a choice to do things better. To remove inflammatory foods, to remove things you are allergic too and probably don't even know, and remove things that spike your blood sugar. A large portion of our population is "insulin resistant" and doesn't even know it, though for people that know what it looks like those affected are easy to spot. (High levels of midsection body fat). Long term, lifestyle change work better than the easy fix. I wish you the best in whatever course you take!

Read it can also help with diabetes. Sometimes reversing it. Weight loss period does that, doesn't matter the method.

One deterrent might be to watch a few episodes of My 600 Pound Life.

Serious question. Is there a medical reason dieting does not work for some people? over eating is no different than alcoholism or other drug addiction some people can quit some cant You can change your lifestyle so you can avoid alchohol or drugs , food thats hard to do . A naturaly skinny person will never understand the hormonal changes that go on in a obese persons body as they lose weight keeping weight off is way harder than quitting smoking .

An active lifestyle would seem to be better than surgery. But, I know a young lady that struggled with weight loss and after the surgery she put her mind to losing weight and is now a fitness instructor along with being a full time nurse. Guess the initial results kickstarted her to what she could actually become. As far as coming off meds, I did all that through the gym and just portion control...and laying off the Dr Peppers and Mountain Dew, nothing but water now. Depends on how bad you want something. Surgery may be your jumpstart, then again it could lead to a worse outcome. It’s all in your head and how you choose to handle it.
Good luck to all those who struggle with being overweight.
