I thought I was the last living person to use the trucker's hitch. Since the invention of the ratchet strap, it seems to have become extinct.

I thought I was the last living person to use the trucker's hitch. Since the invention of the ratchet strap, it seems to have become extinct. Truckers hitch is always a good one. Lots of folks use it here, no extinct yet.

I always tie my bowline with the tag on the outside just to keep the inside loop cleaner. I know its not right because every time I see it demonstrated its done with tag on inside like bottom green rope in Martys video. I've never had it fail the way I use it though.
Double bowline is a good one too. I keep the tag end outside the loop also.

Add the "bowline in a bite" for a bowline in the middle of a rope. Can be loosened up and made larger or smaller with the rope it is made with, then tightened back to not move. Then there is the tugboat bowline for a fast way to get it done.

Double bowline is a good one too. I keep the tag end outside the loop also. That is the yachters way of tying it. The fisherman ties it with the bitter end to the inside of the loop to prevent it from hanging up in the nets.

I agree those three knots will be sufficient for everyday life.

I love learning, practicing, and using knots. I think the bowline is overated. It should be in the top ten for sure, but I'm not so sure it needs to be in the top five.
I just recently learned the taught line hitch and was amazed at the usefulness of this wonderful little knot. How in the world did I make it through fifty+ years without someone showing me the usefulness of this knot? It's fantastic and such a perfect solution to so many applications. It won't substitute for the truckers hitch in every application, but overall, I think it can be used more often.
clove hitch taught line hitch square knot truckers hitch 2 half hitches sheet bend fisherman's knot bowline figure-8
That covers 98% of it for me.
There's more to rope and cord work than just knots, though.

The worst knot is the "Hatchet Knot" - bugs me when people tie those on a good piece of rope......

It's certainly valuable to have a stable of knots/hitches for a variety of applications, and know the applications of each. Whether you're tying to a post, rail, another line, whether you want to slide, stop or bind, the direction of pull and the type of line makes a difference too.
I can throw a bowline or clove in my sleep, from commercial fishing. I used to be able to throw a clove hitch on a rail from 4 ft way (having a little weight or monkey fist on the tag end helps).
I've stretched quite a few tarps with a truckers hitch.
2 half hitches makes either a clove or square/box, depending on which way you stack the halfs.
Boco couldn't catch a cold. But if he did, it would be Top Lot.
