I am trying to figure out the costs associated with picking up stone, gravel, sand, cinders, etc. with "town" dump trucks. In other words, is there a formula that gets you to a price per mile to haul these types of materials?
Wages, benefits, insurance, truck, fuel, etc......all of these things to put a man behind the wheel and send him down the road?
Does it end of being a "cost per mile"? Like "it costs the county $76 dollars a mile to operate a dump truck"
Therefore, lets say the county is picking up gravel at one gravel bed, but then there's a gravel bed that's 15 miles ROUND trip less traveling.......so we'd say the town is spending 15 miles X $76/mile or $1140 per load more than they have to spend?
If not a county or town or even state job, anyone do this on a private enterprise standpoint with a fleet of trucks and drivers?
Thanks!
MZ

The only way that cost per mile could be sustained is if they are using OPM. Oh wait, it's the government so they are using other people's money.

I recently retired as the Town Supervisor. My suspicion is that the pit makes money on the sand AND profit on trucking. btw. More municipalities up here are sharing services to cut cost Hope this helps. Your suspicion ?? Do you think the Sand/gravel mine owner is in business not to make a profit ? I am a gravel mine owner, I sell abrasive road sand to 2 different townships. They constantly complain about the price per cubic yard. But, my mine is 5 miles from one town garage and 7 miles from the other. Both Highway Superintendents always state they can purchase the sand at another mine at a cheaper price per yard, trying to chisel me on the price.. I tell them then go buy it there. But they don’t, because the other mine is farther away, and the increase in trucking costs makes the sand much more expensive.

most of the time hauling rock is a per ton rate. some jobs, especially construction jobs, that want a truck all day its an hourly rate. A minimum of 2.75 a ton for freight is pretty common. more for more miles. even if only hauling 10 miles it will take a half hour per round. sometimes more because of loading/unloading times.
depending on the truck is what hourly rates are. 115-120 is pretty common for any semi around here. a straight truck with multiple axles that can legally haul 18-20 tons will cost about a hundred.
at least here in N.E. KS. Those numbers dont include the price of what is being hauled.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
