Do coyotes shy away from electric fences? I spoke with the rancher today who gave me permission to trap the coyotes preying on their calves, and she said the coyotes are moving towards the calves, and she doesn’t want a calf to get caught in a trap. The cows avoid the fences, so I can set the fence line. I just want to make sure they don’t shy away from them.

Iv caught them in snares in fence line with a hot wire on it. Unless it's a low wire to keep cows from pushing under I doubt they pay much attention to it.

Coyotes are smart enough to figure out the safe distance to things like electric. Besides most cattle operations run hot wire at cow height not dog height. Use common sense in placing sets and you won't have any avoidance.

My dad grew up during the depression. Straightened bent nails from remodeling projects to save money. Late in life he had to put an electric fence around the garden because the deer were eating everything. Every fall he would take the wire down, roll it up and save it for next year. pull the plastic post up and do the same. All summer - no deer in the garden. One fall he shut the electricity off to the fence but took 2 days before he started to take down the fence. He said the garden was loaded with deer tracks. If deer can figure out if a fence is hot or not after just 2 days, I think coyotes can figure out what to avoid.

Cows know when it is off too. They are much more sensitive to electric shock then humans are. That my be similar in deer and others.
