Got permission to trap on a place that has some creek bottom but mostly cow pasture. He told me I could trap the woods near the creek but is concerned about calves getting in traps if I set out in the fields like I would like to. I'm going to meat up with him and he is going to show me around a little. I know the land tho because he is family I just haven't been out there in a long time. Any talking points yall know that could convince him that the traps won't hurt his calves?

Think I’d be more worried about calves hurting the traps.

Trap outside the pasture if you can if not find places the cows cannot go in the creek maybe but working around cows is a pain. I’d show the owner the size if the trap compared to a calf’s foot, most people think bear traps when traps are talked about.

Ive trapped in and around cattle my whole life, if they see you set a trap the set is doomed!!! They are very curious critters also, so strong lures will make them paw and sniff around. One sound method I have used over the years is use the corners. That really depends on how big the area is, and corners away from the yard or where the cows feed comes from work better. Obviously this is not 100% effective as nothing is when trapping in cows, they will find them and they will destroy traps. Really it will depend on the cows also, not all cows are bucket broke and some are not comfortable with people walking through them. Lots of variables in your question, doable yes, will you have some headaches, yes. If you have the option to set some on the other side of the fence from the cattle I would not pass on that set.

Forgot to add I have seen calves step in #2 and #3 size traps, and when I refer to a calf I am talking 70lb newborn to a 600lb weaned calf. Some hit the pan directly, none of them ever remained in the trap after they jumped when it went off.

Thanks for the input guys. I have trapped several cow pastures over the years and it seems like around here you will have some places where cows won't bother you at all and some places where they will cause pure misery. But this is the first time I have ever had a cow mess up a set before I Eaven get to see a trap lol.I will bring a trap and let him se like yall have mentioned.

If you have a predominant wind go as far as you can the other way and set it could by you some time cattle like to feed into the wind.

I had some luck in cow pastures with DPs in out of the way spots where ditches crossed fence lines and on pond dams the cows stayed off of. Coyote sets were doomed.

I put 9 sets in a pasture for a week. I reset at least 7 traps everyday! LOL Them dang critters escorted me around the pasture the whole time. Like a bunch of kids following the ice cream truck. I did put a set on a steep incline that I dont think the cows preferred and that was the only set that produced a yote. Never again will I set a pasture!
