I am thinking about switching from cable to #2chain on my wolf fangs. I switched to Freedom brand wolf fangs last year and had zero bend while pulling(with atv winch), but had several cables (3/32) and some ferrules fail. And I am not saying that they shouldn't fail with pulling this way, just looking for opinions. My plan is to weld the s-hooks , and would have to cut the wolf fang off and replace when they eventually do bend beyond repair. The positives i see are less messing around attaching cable stakes to trap after boiling, and not dealing with cable sticking up when I am unable to drive the stake as deep as I planned. The negatives are initial cost, and the chance of having to cut the chain in field if stake is unretrievble.
Thank you for your thoughts

I switched to chain wolf fangs a few years back. I like the chain a lot for most reasons you have already came up with. I don’t use a hooks throw. I cut the tab on the wolf fang and bend it up, then I place the chain link on the tab pound it back down, and then weld the tab back shut. Saves on the s hooks.

You will bend the ones that broke cable once you put chain on as long as it holds together.

Wish I had more time to trap....

I agree, the Wolf fang will bend. I use about a foot of cable and 6 inches of chain. If I can’t retrieve the anchor I usually can save the chain by digging down a little ways and cutting the cable.

If you use chain and the anchor bends at least you would just replace the anchor. If you break or cut the cable you would be replacing cable and anchor. I use chain and super stakes. Started with cable and broke too many pulling. Will say I have broke #2 chain a couple of times pulling.

How do you pull them? with a pickup?

I’ve got all our predator traps on chain some on Wolf fang and some on bullet ends to see what we like better, next year all predator traps will be on chain with bullet stakes

To get them out easier I’ll run my auger down beside my chain most of the time they will pull right out. If they don’t a stake puller gets them out. If they bend I cut the link and replace the wolf fang. Bending them back is a waste of time they just bend twice as easily the next go around. I pre drive with a harden rod it lets me judge if the ground is to Hard before running my anchor down. If the ground is to hard I just use a drag no point wasting time trying to pound a earth anchor in.

I use nothing but cable on my earth anchors. Sometimes It's tough to drive the anchor with cable I can't imagine trying to drive It with chain attached. Besides cable Is stronger then chain and a whole lot cheaper and
It's a lot lighter.

I pre-drill mine and never pull them. I'm now (second year) only using the no BS guys chain bullet stakes. I reuse them the next time I trap an area. The no BS stuff mostly looks like new after one year waiting for me to return.

I don't use the earth anchors often but I use chain for everything. I set where I have logs and a natural anchor that is already on th eland scape so I never have to mess with driving an anchor or stakes very often.

I like to use chain so much easier to work with for me.

I run #3 chain on my wolf fangs. I use #3 mainly because all quick links sems to go through any loop no issue on #3. On a lot of #2 style chain you have to either pry a bit to get a quick link on or they just don't fit period. Everything I do is set up with a system of attaching and running anchors drags stakes or whatever i run. All of my traps can be hooked up to my drowners or stakes or drags. Once set up it is just easier for me. That doesn't really effect chain or cable but it is the reason for #3 instead of #2 in my book. I run chain because in my neck of the woods you might need 6" depth on an anchor or you might need 18" depending on where the hard pan is located or if you are in straight sugar sand. With cable i was tired of fighting the cable sticking up in the sand. Not a major deal but it i just irritating. Everything minus my drowners is chain now. The only reason they are not chain is i just don't have enough money to convert them as well yet. There is always next year of course lol.

I never thought of Beav's concern, with it being more difficult driving the anchor with chain. Do you guys find this to be across the board?

I don't see a difference driving cable and chain stakes. I have had cable cut on underground rocks when hammering them in. Makes me worried about using them since you can't see if they are damaged.

I go to reset in past favorite places and I find the old cables sticking out of the ground. I trim them if needed and drive in a new fang it saves my back and a lot of time in the end.
