I am familiar with the terminology but not application as I am a civilian. Start putting into the TSP yesterday...Put at a minimum the max they will match. For me its up to around 6%.
I have chosen to put in 12% into the C and S funds. 70% C and 30% S This use your TSP to your advantage. Pay your self 10% at least and look into the L funds as they will manage the risk for you as you get close to retirement. Hunted with an accountant one year and he split his 50-50 traditional vs roth. With the new tax laws that are getting thrown around wish I had a lot more in the roth side of things.

I work with a Chief who is also a reservist and a civilian who would know likely specifics if you want. Simply wanted to know if a break in service will result in your current amount in years you have not counting towards your retirement. Also is there a period of time you have between getting out and getting back in where it won't effect you? I know with the old system it was like a year. No one in my unit seems to know

Who do you want to go work for? You could call the VA hr dept and ask them the question. I actually didn't think about the VA and I'm talking about retirement though the national guard. Due to medical reasons I'm probably gonna end up having a break in service soon

I don’t have a TSP but many of the folks I know who do and are financially savvy say that the best mix is 10% in C, 10% in S, the rest in I

Wolf,
Hope you are ok, you still going to school? If your illness is service related at all document document document. Vets preference will help you when or if you look at a civilian position with another agency. Get that degree and there are lots and lots of different jobs out there for someone with your interests. Yeah I've gotten kind used to it lol. Just due to the issue most likely will not be able to reenlist. I'm already getting VA disability for it but after dealing with the government since I was 17 I'm not holding my breath their gonna let me keep getting my little 30% . But yeah I've got it documented pretty well, just printed out 130 pages worth of lab resulted and what not the other day matter o fact. But on the bright side guess I'll be able to do more and not have to plan around drill.

Wolf you may end up loosing the retirement if you can't re enlist or stay out too long. However, if your disability will cause you to not be able to re up and it is service connected you should be able to cmp yourself into a higher percentage. Additionally, Hit medical hard between now and then with any ailments as it can all make a factor. I'm not suggesting you play the system but you need to get all your benfits. If you can get up to or over 50% you will get better compensation and all your medical and meds will be covered at the VA.
