Went to a large marsh today, the major storm we had over Christmas raised the water about 4 feet ,then we got ice on top. What happened to the rats? Think they drowned? saw very few air bubbles walking around.

We get that here in Eastern Lake Ontario coastal marshes.

Big blow from the west combined with high winds,
and a freeze during the storm surge (seiche) and
we lose significant part of the population to drowning.

What or how exactly does most of the rats drown? I mean, swimming is their main mode of transportation, maybe a freak couple get killed but significant???

Rats are the favorite food of most predators. If they don't drown from the high water, they get et.

I have no experience but I think rats must be smart enough to survive thousands of years of these events. My money is on the rat.

Most times, they'll go upstream into the smaller feeder creeks and ditches.

The times they move the most here is high water and low water times. I know the beaver just dig a hole in the banks and ride it out.
