My youngest shot his first deer with my daughters when he was 7 at 96 yards. Dropped it.

My boys alternate between the 7mm08 and 243 50cal ml and at times 300 blackout.

. A poor shot it a poor shot regardless of caliber. Only practice will help that not a 50 bmg.

If I lived in a state that allowed bottleneck rounds (and I still hunted deer), I'd think a 7mm08 would be like Kevin put it...near perfection.

I got the 350 legend yet to shoot though, will let you know how I feel about it after wards. May just have the barrel changed out if I do not like it. I have the 6.5 creedmoor. Don't care so much for its destruction of meat so I don't use it for hunting anymore. If you want a 6.5 get a 6.5x55 or 6.5 Grendel, they both are accurate and fine hunting rounds. If not, a 7mm or 6mm round would work nicely. I got the 7x57 mauser and an thinking of getting the 7mm rem mag.

308 or 7mm08 they both have good reputations for taking nearly every game in north America

very similar for recoil the 180grain in a stock 308 are not punishing but very effective add a brake and recoil is quite minimal.

with the brake I only notice the noise shooting enclosed or close , no ear plugs shooting across the hood of my truck the sound bounces off the wind shield and that ear rang a little

recoil should be very similar in 7mm08 or 308 one is a heavier bullet the other is faster

good electronic ear plugs or muffs might be a good thing either way

some of the lighter bullets don't always make an exit hole , I like 2 holes if I can get it.
good shot placement is good shot placement but if there is no 2nd hole even a deer that ran 50 yards may be hard to find in thick stuff with no trail.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Her shots could be a little off because she is flinching with that 30-06. The 6.5 Grendel is a fine deer round with next to no recoil. If you get her something like that and enough rounds to practice with for a while, she will loose the flinch and get more accurate. Hey she has bags of time till next dear season to practice. Same goes for the 243 ..... If ya want a thumper that fits in a small action, 458 SOCOM will deck a deer or bear much like a 45-70 with about the same recoil as a 30-06

I have a 6.5 creed moor and at 180 yards it dropped an antelope like a sack of bricks. That’s with a perfect quartering away shot that punched through the lung and heart. That said it is not a caliber that has enough kinetic energy to make up for poor shot placement, at all, but especially past 300-400 yards. The kinetic energy of that round drops like a rock after 500, although it is extremely accurate waaay out there.

I don’t know anything about a .350 legend

Bruce, I honestly think your wife would benefit far more if you took the money you’d spend on a new gun and spend it on a quality shooting instructor to teach her how to shoot more precisely. Good shot placement makes any rifle an effective one.

I picked up a 350 Legend Savage Axis with a Weaver scope for under $200 after rebate in 2019. Didn't really need it since on private land in Indiana we can just about anything, but for the price I couldn't pass it up . My thought was it would make an excellent light weight, low recoil, accurate, deer rifle for my daughter. For the wooded areas around us, out to 200 yards it's perfect. We had being useing the ol' 30-06, but really overkill for the average range of 50 to 100 ydrs. Plus 350 FMJ are cheap to shot for practice. She shot a nice buck at 130 yds. , quartered away, opening day with Hornady 170 gr soft point, deer went 20 yds. and dropped.

Reloaders hate it, guys with 30-30's and 35 Rem hate it, guys who hate anything new hate it ; but it still kills deer dead out to 150 to 200 yds. with low recoil and muzzle blast.

Her semi auto 30-06 has little recoil. Her biggest problem is not settling in and shooting to quickly. Thanks for all the information.

while she sleeps put headphones on her and play audio shooting instruction, she will absorb it and will become a great shooter
