I ran across a thread over the weekend describing various scent post sets. I have searched the archives multiple times and for the life of me cannot find what I am looking for. The post described how posts were wrapped in fabric and scent applied. I have only recently started trapping with my two sons and have only used dirt hole sets. If any of you would mind pointing me in the right direction for how to make the set I’ve described I’d appreciate it. Again, I have read a ton on the flat set and scent post archives, but the one I’m looking for seemed very interesting to me. Thanks again.

Its a hard to beat a flat rock or a cow turd for a flat set. About as natural as you can get and you can gently guide them onto the pan.

JJS. Scent Post. And Flat Sets are all I use. I am in West Texas now. I had already told some of the guys on my West Texas trapping thread I would post up some before and after pics. I caught all 11 coyotes today on Post or Flat type Sets. If you like. I will post some pics on this thread for you tomorrrow?

I'm with steeltraps, dirt holes take much time and labor.

The book Variations of the Flat Set by Charles Dobbins is a must for land trappers...get it FREE once loved ones are on board JJS.

there's at least a dozen styles of flat sets in the book.

Here is a Flat Set remake. Just grab a cow patty and flatten out catch circle

How well does a cow paddy work when there are no cows around?

I’ve used a fresh mule apple for a guide in a place with no horses or mules and caught a coyote the first night . I don’t se why a cow patty wouldn’t work just as well , accept they don’t travel very well , lol .

So most of our cows are factory housed. But I do have a guy who raises beef and they are out on grass. Can I pick up dry paddy's and store them someplace?
We have cow chip throwing contests here In WI so it must be viable.

No problems using them with no cows around. Stack and store where ever, just keep'm dry.

This is a set I made the other day using a post and cow skull, I tend to do this during rainy periods. The idea is to have the skull upside down showing the hole to the brain cavity with a bit of lure inside the hole so it doesn't get washed away with the rain.
Last pic shows the skull partially buried in leaf litter on the right and I added the post on the left with the trap in between.

steeltraps, about how far from the scent post so you bed your trap?

Don’t forget the black block. Charred untreated 4x4. Caught several over the years on it. Of all the yotes I shoot on bait I would say about half are killed working scent posts. The block is my favorite for that.

I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.

More trappin' and less yappin'.

We-Sa. I never get to hung up on how many inchs I put my trap back from the scent post. A bigger taller post I will But the trap back farther. If I had to say. I would quess about 8 to 9 inch back most of the time

Where possible, I would rather use a flat rock than a cow chip as they don't move! If its cold enough where they freeze to the ground they work a lot better. Tom Miranda's competition line on Coyotes is an excellent read on this. Use a lot of flat sets out here due to the frozen ground. Although this year, it had been so warm I'm still drilling some dirt holes!

Thanks, that's what I figured but I was having a hard time getting the scale, right perspective on the second picture.

Are you putting your scent directly on that block? How are you making your block?
