Nice variety of colors on your marten! I am trapping due West of you and have not seen a single track and very little sign of voles etc. Yeah I know where you are. You’ll find your marten pockets, just takes time in this area. Concentrate on saddles. By this I don’t necessarily mean a saddle between two hillsides, although those are also places to scope out, but saddles of land between groups of thick spruce out on the flats. They may look barren, but marten in our area consists of mostly large dark males and they are always traveling in these saddles. Food source and birds of prey are the biggest obstacles in our area for marten. I have explored many miles of perfect elevation and marten country with no luck. Just gotta stumble into them. Good luck!

Is that a black fox?
I found this on the Alaska F&G site:
The silver and black phases are similar. However, the black does not have the silver-tipped guard hairs characteristic of the silver fox. The occurrence of black-silver phase appears to increase toward the north and the northwest of Alaska. However, even where most abundant, it comprises less than two percent of the population. It is definitely a silver fox. Face and back have beautiful silver hair. One of the nicest silver fox I have ever seen. Not a flaw with him. Been offered $600 but he’s still hanging on my wall..
